i use last.fm to track bands on tour. problem is, not that many bands make it this far south... so i try to plan trips to canada or europe to coincide with cool shows.

Tallest Man On Earth should have been a day gig. I love their music, but they can't pull off a big night show on a main stage.

Beirut was amazing. Great fun to watch. I was glad to finally see them live.

The National was the main act and they didn't disappoint. I last saw them some ten years ago and they have really evolved. Much more refined musically. I can't really say that I'm a "fan" of a lot of bands, but I'm definitely a National fantard.

I saw them at a tiny festival in Western Germany, Haldern Pop. It was really nice, because it's only 6000 people, but the choice of bands is always excellent.

ETA: I think you and Sput would have really enjoyed it, the crème de la crème of indie, esp. great new bands who are just about to get big. Art student rock, as my bf says, lol.

yeah, i remember little festivals like that. i used to spend my summers doing that. *sigh*
i miss living in europe sometimes...

and yeah, the national have definitely evolved. but what i love is that while their music has definitely gotten more refined, they've lost none of that raw energy they've had since the beginning. that's a rare thing and very few bands manage to have both. they are such a good live band. count me in as a fantard...

i'm seeing crystal castles in a few weeks, and then i have another 3 goods shows coming up in october and november - philip glass, air and phoenix.

National defintely gave me goosebumps more than once. Raw energy indeed.

Phoenix was a bit of a disappointment. Very introverted and weird. Saw them a long time ago, though. They were so young back then, shy even.

Air ought to be great! Crystal Castles, too. The new album is the shit.

penguins are found in the temperate zones so that's either south america, south africa, new zealand or australia if you look at the southern latitudes. not going to take the small pacific islands into consideration. i'm going to guess and say patagonia because it's where i would go to (i blame paul theroux. i have read 'the old patagonian express' too many times) but i have to admit that it would be weird if you moved from geneva to somewhere in patagonia. that's a pretty drastic change. new zealand is probably a safer guess. which type of penguins are we actually talking about? if i knew that, i would be able to narrow down the possibilities somewhat.

okay, sounds awesome! they have an interesting line-up. i'm putting it on the agenda for 2011.

the last time i went to germany for a concert was a couple of years ago. there was a pagan and folk metal festival in gießen and there was a band from the UK we had to see, i think it was cruachan. we stuck out horribly. half of the people present were dressed in viking attire and the other half was dressed in black. we weren't prepared for that, we had only packed normal clothes. as a result, we looked completely out of place. it was in a small space with no windows or air ventilation. i remember i got a heachache; 80% of the air seemed to consist of smoke. the audience was pretty wild, too. when it finally ended, we had to climb over a huge, bulky guy wearing only a bear skin and a horn who had passed out and lay spread eagled on the stairs outside. it was one of the weirdest and funniest sights ever. it was very cold that night, minus 10 degrees. i also remember that the apple juice/cider you could buy there was really good... the next day we went to visit the justus von liebig museum, also in gießen. we're a bunch of science nerds.

i could just tell you where i am but if you want to keep guessing: humboldt and magellanic penguins.
