I've never tried to use regular film cameras so I dont know about them with metal detectors, but I'd put my money on an old style camera setting off a metal detector before a digi cam would. And if you arent going to have the worry of your camera being dropped or anything like that (say, in a mosh pit or anything) I'd say you'd probably be fine sneaking in the digi cam. You should put a sticker or something with your name and phone number on it though, in case for whatever reason they catch you sneaking it in and do take it you can make sure to get it back after the show.
As far as flash if you're going to be farther away, you probably dont want to use it. Not because you're not allowed to, but it will end up illuminating the people in front of you and washing out the stage. The stage normally has lights bright enough for the camera to pick up the details.

K, the 2 concerts I went to last week, so many people brought in their digi cams!
At MC concert, the security did look in people's purses and frisked but they had no metal detectors. At Joan Jett's, they didn't even check anyone for anything except for having valid tickets. But it looked like the security peeps inside were telling people not to use flash when some were testing out.
I so wish I brought the digi cam to the MC concert hubby also stopped me from stuffing a disposable cam in my bra.

I've stuck it down my underwear. If you're a girl, they won't pat down your crotch, and so many cameras are so small nowadays anyways. Of course, this works best if it's your *OWN* camera.
Be careful though, a friend I was with tried to sneak in a camera in his pocket and the venue bastards actually confiscated his memory card. They wouldn't give it back, either, which was bullshit. So be careful.

I actually went to a concert in which they let me in with a VIDEO camera, but retained my water bottles (WTF?). Oh, and they weren't selling water inside.

It is so easy to do this. I usually wait to see what kind of person is
doing the frisking. Usually if I find one that is laxed or by himself
I go to that line. There are so many ways to hide it in your
bag or purse. If you have a make up bag or tampon box.
(they wont look in there, or hide in under pads or tampons)
I always move my bag around for them so they don't have to
touch it, when the line is long they just want to get the
people in there. Another good place is in the area of your tummy
where your belt is. If by some chance the dectors go off,
you can blame it on the belt buckle.

Ok this time I'm going to a concert VIP (bought the premium tickets) and I'm seated very close to the stage. Do you think the security would be tougher on me and would check me more thoroughly because of this?
The only thing I'd like to sneak in is my digicam. Because premium seats are ticketless, I can't find specific info or rules about whether the artists or the venue allows cameras for this specific event.
Has anyone gone to an event ticketless? I don't know how this is going to work, I'm a little worried if we are really going to be allowed in etc.

^^
if the camera's small, just put it somewhere else in your purse, like your make-up bag or something. in a box of tampons is a good idea too, like the other poster said.
they're not very strict here. i was at montreux jazz festival a few times in the last couple of weeks and i wasn't even trying to sneak a camera in since i just usually have my camera in my purse. they just open your purse and peer in and if they don't see the camera in plain view they let you pass. i wasn't even trying to hide it, it was just near the bottom.

I'm a little confused by the whole ticketless/premium ticket thing you're talking about. Can you explain?
I have gone to many shows VIP and/or without a ticket and never have been searched. To be honest, it makes it easier to get in.
Once in, you shouldn't have a problem with cameras even if you're close, unless you're right up against the stage. They might then tell you just to turn the flash off because it could distract the performer.

I should have said premium seats instead of premium tickets cuz the concert is ticktless for these particular seats. We didn't know it was ticketless though cuz the initial instruction from Ticketmaster was that we were to pick up our tickets at one of their booths but we go to one and the clerk tells us it's ticketless for us cuz those are VIP seats. It's ticketless because the artist(s) doesn't want scalpers to sell them. I don't think the clerk should've even called it VIP, we paid for them, it's not like we got invited for free. So the correct term still stands as "premium seats."
I'm going to be in the 6th row, that's not too close to the stage I don't think. The first row is reserved for photographers and videographers (= an observation from other concerts at this venue I've been to).

moomies, if you don't have a ticket how will they know to let you in? Do you have to show ID? I get the reason for this, scalping sucks.
No helpful clues on cameras, I've snuck them in many concerts but I'm usually too preoccupied with the actual concert to take photos or video. The one place where I kind of wished I had snapped pics was in my first concert, Guns 'n Roses in '92. But I was way in the front and I was afraid to use it thinking that if Axel saw it he would jump down from the stage and beat me up. So I didn't take a single pic
