    Because the Night- Patti Smith

It's a Bruce Springsteen song, but Patti just owns it

    Yeah...

I like the Indigo Girls version of Romeo and Juliet better than Dire Straits.

I also like Spiderbait's cover of Black Betty (Well, really its an old folk tune turned into a rock song, but Ram Jam popularized it)

Yep, Amy Ray tore that one up, it still gives me chills. I get the feeling she's lived it. I also agree about Springsteen's' "Because the Night", his songs are so great it's really hard to screw them up, Emmylou Harris kills on "the price you pay" too. What I like in a cover is someone who can take a song and completely give it a new sound or a new life, there was a soul singer earlier this year who covered "More than words" by Extreme and I thought he did an awesome job, giving an old hair band classic an R&B twist, that is really something special, to hear a song done completely differently. Tori Amos does that well too. On the other hand, one thing that annoys the bejesus out of me is how they take every rock hit and turn it into a predictable country song which you will accidentally hear while driving, ruining the original.

Oh, and Cyndi Lauper apparently can cover any song in existence well (live). She's amazingly talented, really more deserving of the esteem that Madonna has, she should have Madonna's fame and I don't understand what happened.

Every time my husband hears Elton John singing it, he swears he tells me that Elton wanted the title to be "Don't Let Your Son Go Down on Me".

I like "Hazy Shade of Winter" by the Bangles (Originally by Simon and Garfunkel).

    Torn was a cover?
And I agree with you on Eva; her cover of 'Fields Of Gold' was amazing.

I absolutely love that song. He just nails it. I loved Marilyn's Sweet Dreams too. He does do a mean cover.

Soft Cell's version was already a cover, the original version was by Gloria Jones in the 60's

Some of my faves have been posted already but here it goes again. I love covers that take songs and give them a whole different twist. Which is why I adore Nouvelle Vague. I also like most of Marilyn Manson's covers, Tainted Love in particular.

    Sonic Youth - Superstar

    Faith no more - Easy

That really cool Comfortably Numb cover. I started out hating it for the sacrilege of covering Floyd and then it totally grew on me. Can't remember the band's name.
    Turn the page- Metallica
    Fantastic video too

    So What - Metallica
However, though it's an ok cover, their version of Whiskey in the Jar doesn't do much for me.

And of course, Johnny Cash's version of Hurt. He took the song and completely made it his own.

I also like Cake covers, I adore their take on I will survive and I recently heard a cover of War Pigs and they did a great job there too.
