My vote goes to Police and Thieves by The Clash (Junior Murvin's original)

    Fiona Apple's "Across the Universe"

possibly the only person who covered a Beatles song, and din't get crucified in the press for it.

Dang it, already appeared twice in this thread. Ok, how about Soixie and the Banshees covers of both "The Passenger" orig by Iggy Pop and their version of "Dear Prudence" was far superior to the Beatles.

there are a lot of great dylan covers on the 'i'm not there' soundtrack, but my faves are:

i'm not there - sonic youth. brilliant, subdued (for sonic youth), subtle and simply gorgeous.

ballad of a thin man - stephen malkmus (and the million dollar bashers - a 'supergroup' created just for the soundtrack). amazing. the perfect cover - familiar and yet a completely new and original version of an old classic.

goin' to acapulco - jim james and calexico

stuck inside of mobile with the memphis blues again - cat power

simple twist of fate - jeff tweedy

mama you've been on my mind - jack johnson

I like the Micah P. Hinson cover of "Yard of Blonde Girls" better than Jeff Buckley's (which is a cover itself). My sister vehemently disagrees with me on this

I like The Cure's cover of "Purple Haze." I think I might be the only person in the world who likes it.

franz ferdinand - 'all my friends' (cover of lcd soundsystem)
sounds a bit like the strokes but it's a pretty great song. better than the original IMO.

I also really like the Bangles cover of Hazy Shade of Winter. I'm only slightly ashamed to admit that haha.

I found another great cover; in fact I like it better than the original. Here is the Killers covering Dire Straits' Romeo and Juliet.

I love 'Feels Like Home' by Chantal Kreviazuk (you can find it on any Dawson's Creek CD, Volume 1).
Much better than the odd original by... I don't even know her name. Bonnie someone.
