"Cold Day in July" by The Dixie Chicks (I love it even though I hate country music)
Agreed with feeling Bonnie's pain in that song. I also love that Dixie Chicks song!

Also pretty much anything by Sarah McLachlan. Specifically I Love You off the Surfacing album. I'm tearing up just thinking about that song.

Nina Simone or Jeff Buckley's version of her song "Lilac Wine"--I think his is sadder, actually.''

The original list at the beginning of the thread included a song I adore--"Heart Like A Wheel" by the McGarrigle Sisters, whose debut album is one of the best things I've ever heard in any genre. I agree about that song, but they also did one called "Talk To Me Of Mendocino" that KILLS. You can't even hum it without weeping. Linda Ronstadt said that although it's her favorite song, she could barely manage to record it because she would break down every time.

I think her own "Long, Long Time" is sublimely gut-wrenching too, though. Great breakup song.

But the saddest song ever? Oh, it's THIS one:
"Nothing Takes The Place Of You" by Toussaint McCall. It's haunting. Beyond bleak, so resigned and despairing, and such a stripped-down sound, just his indescribably beautiful voice and that soft, mournful organ. *sigh* Just listen, this is peerless.

Mr Johnson's Love by Dwight Yoakam. Makes me cry.

If You Could Read My Mind by Gordon Lightfoot. Yeah, I'm old. Don't give a shit. It still sounds good.

Just Stay by Bearfoot.

Sweet Old World by Lucinda Williams. Written after her friend committed suicide.

Can't cry hard enough - The Williams Brothers. I cry everytime I hear this song because it reminds me of my best friend.

Matchbox Twenty- Hand Me Down

Hand Me Down Matchbox Twenty - YouTube

Someday they'll find your small town world on a big town avenue
Gonna make you like the way they talk when they're talking to you
Gonna make you break out of the shell cause they tell you to
Gonna make you like the way they lie better than the truth
They'll tell you everything you wanted someone else to say
They're gonna break your heart, yeah

[Chorus]

From what I've seen
You're just a one more hand me down
Cause no one's tried to give you what you need
So lay all your troubles down
I am with you now

Somebody ought to take you in
Try to make you love again
Try to make you like the way they feel
When they're under your skin
Never once did think they'd lie when they're holding you
You wonder why they haven't called
When they said they'd call you
You start to wonder if you're ever gonna make it by
You'll start to think you were born blind

[Chorus]

From what I've seen
You're just a one more hand me down
Cause no one's tried to give you what you need
So lay all your troubles down
I am with you now

I'm here for the hard times
The straight to your heart times
Whenever it ain't easy
You can stand up against me
And maybe rely on me
And cry on me, yeah
Oh no, no, no

Some day they'll open up your world
Shake it down on a drawing board
Do their best to change you
They still can't erase you

[Chorus]

From what I've seen
You're just a one more hand me down
Cause no one's tried to give you what you need
So lay all your troubles down
I am with you now

Lay them down on me
Oh yeah
You're just one more hand me down
And all those nots don't give you what you need
So lay all your troubles down...on me

Sad? Sad? I don't know why this one gets to me, but it sure does. When Patsy or Etta sing, forget about it.

Beyondshit recorded this for the movie. It is so laughable when she sings it because it's technically fine but there is no feeling. There is nothing in her voice. You can hear Etta's heart breaking through her voice.

I heard church bells ringing
I heard a choir singing
I saw my love walk down the aisle
On her finger he placed a ring

Oh, I saw them holding hands
She was standing there with my man
I heard them promise "Till death do us part"
Each word was a pain in my heart

All I could do, all I could do was cry (cry, cry, cry)
All I could do was cry (cry, cry, cry)
I was losing the man that I loved
And all I could do was cry (cry, cry, cry)

Yeah and now the wedding's over
Rice, rice has been thrown over their heads
For them life has just begun
But mine is at an end

All, all I could do, all I could do was cry (cry, cry, cry)
All I could do was cry (cry, cry, cry)
I was losing the man that I loved (cry, cry, cry)
And all I could do was cry (cry, cry, cry)

Shine on you crazy diamond-Pink Floyd
The song touches the soul like no other and it's about the founder of the band Syd Barrett who suffered from mental illness.
