I Love Rock & Roll: Joan Jett. Nothing wrong with the Arrows version, but that guy just can't snarl like Joan. (Few can.)
Tainted Love: Soft Cell.

vs the lesser known original by Dalbello:

Neither of these are actually the original (which was performed first by its writer, Folk singer Anne Bredon in the 1950's) but here are two versions of "Babe I'm gonna leave you".

All of God's children are not beautiful. Most of God's children are, in fact, barely presentable.
Dusty Springfield -- first, last, and always (although I really like that White Stripes version).
Speaking of Springfield, here is her version of "The Look of Love":

My radio alarm went off to Dolly Parton's Jolene this morning, which (after a couple of months of White Stripes' obsession) was a little weird...
It's different horses for different courses? I like Dolly's original to dance to, but I love Jack White's howling in the Stripes' cover... really depends on my mood as to which I prefer.
Both kill Olivia Newton-John's cover.
Ok.... i've had this conversation so many times. Would you read a book called Barry Potter??? What if he had a diamond on his forehead and waved his magic crutch around? I know it's getting ridiculous but so is the idea that these so called artists need to remake someone else's song. Artist's create.... lately they've been stealing and they wonder why we download their shit on soulseek. More to come later i'm going to chow...
WARRIORS BY DAY, LOVERS BY NIGHT, PROFESSIONALS BY CHOICE, AND MARINES BY THE GRACE OF GOD.
Yeah. You can't compare cover songs to plagarism, but good try!
Enjoy your troll chow.
In some cases the cover is actually better than the original. From a personal point of view I would say that the GnR version of "Live and Let Die" is far superior to the original Wings version, which is as weak as a man with no blood by comparison. Then again, there are originals that outclass the cover in every respect, such as (and again, this is just in my personal opinion) the original of "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey pisses all over the Glee version. Also, sometimes a cover version comes about as the song has long been a favourite and an inspiration to whoever is doing the cover. A cover version isn't always about turning a fast buck (although sadly that seems to be the case in so many latter day covers).
Anyway, here's two more for comparison.

They are both great, but Healey's really does it for me personally.

the cover is actually pretty awesome. it's somehow right that tortoise would cover yanni but thurston moore? now that's just surreal.
I'm open to everything. When you start to criticise the times you live in, your time is over. - Karl Lagerfeld
I like the Yanni version better, and I generally don't enjoy Yanni.
Going the other direction: classic rock song to cover using classical instruments.
Wish You Were Here-Pink Floyd

Wish You Were Here-Rasputina

I LOVE the Rasputina version. I was moderately obsessed with them when I was a teenager just because of the fact it was cello goth rock (unashamed music nerd right here)-this is not very representative of their music as a whole.
