Dire Straits for me. I've always loved that song.

I've always loved Cocker's version better.
All of God's children are not beautiful. Most of God's children are, in fact, barely presentable.

i like the johnny cash cover best...his voice at that point in his life was *perfect* for that song.

white, black, puerto rican/everybody just a freakin'/good times were rollin'.
Johnny Cash did some awesome covers. There's a great acoustic version he did of U2's "One" out there somewhere.... brilliant. Always makes me cry. Just Johnny and a guitar. Nothing else. No fancy additions, no vocal acrobatics... just a man and the lyrics. Cuts right through to your soul.
(Sorry - at work, can't access You Tube)
Also: Chris Isaak's Wicked Game v HIM's version. Love HIM's version so much, and it's become such an iconic song that they do in every single live show that you tend to forget it's not their song originally.
Love Bowie's China Girl over Iggy. Soft Cell over Gloria thingy (although the Living End's cover of that song is pretty good too!). Sinead over Prince.
Mad World by Tears for Fears - 1982

I am from the American CIA and I have a radio in my head. I am going to kill you.
I loved the Tears for Fears version when I was growing up, but there is something very haunting about the Gary Jules version, so I'll go with that one.
Ednaswap - Torn (1995)

The Natalie Imbruglia cover (1997)

Ednaswap version. I like the rawer, less produced feel. (I didn't even know that one was a cover.)
Sassiness: I really like the HIM cover of "Wicked Game" too, especially the 666 remix, but I can't say I prefer it to the original. I think they're equal.
Sexyback - Justin Timberlake original:

Or Rivethead's rocking version:

They're very different takes on it. Isaak's original is very plaintive and haunting, whereas HIM's rocks out a bit harder and is bit more.... I dunno how to describe it - forcefully frustrated??
HIM also have a great cover of Blue Oyster Cult's (Don't Fear) The Reaper on Greatest Love Songs vol 666. Slowed it down and got in a female vocalist to turn it into a duet. Not sure if I like it more than the original.... depends on my mood. Sometimes I prefer BOC, othertimes I prefer HIM's take on it.
This is a great example of how to remake a classic.

I love both versions

The original song was one of my favorites as a kid. It's one of the few songs I can sing perfectly acapella. I think the Amy Winehouse version is good too.
For everyone else:
Johnny Cash for Hurt
Gary Jules for Mad World
Rivethead for SexyBack - never heard it before, liked it

And it's now time for two classics:
Knocking on Heaven's Door
Dylan:

(finding the original dylan version on youtube took me forever)
or G&R:

You know who does a really good version of Knocking on Heaven's Door.
Randy Crawford. And Axl should stick to what he knows for reals.

Procol Harum for A Whiter Shade of Pale, GnR for Knocking on Heaven's Door. (I like their version of Sympathy for the Devil, too, so shoot me.)
