Default Is anyone here into stuff other than pop, rock and hip hop?

like jazz, latin and classical music?

I really like Bossa nova A LOT but I just got into it recently so I don't know much about it. I like some salsa music, too.
If anyone here is into Latin music, plz recommend me some artists.

I don't listen to classical music that often but I like Bach. I also like Chopin and his piano music.

I love Jazz and a lot of instrumental stuff.

My faovurite bands that kind of fit into the rock/hip hop catagories but kind of also fit into the Jazz/Latin/Instrumental catagories are: The Dirty Three(rock, instrumental) and The Cat Empire (Latin, Rock, Jazz).

If you ever check out The Cat Empire fine their cover of Hotel California, its incredible. As for The Dirty Three its chaotic and energetic and fronted by a violinist. Both great australian bands.

I also love Flamenco Guitar. I dont care who does it or in what style its done, Flamenco Guitar plucking kills me everytime. I once sat in a cafe for 3 hours because there was a guitarist in there playing that music. All that intricate finger work and the amazing sounds they create. It just kills me.

I also think Nick Cave is brilliant and does an amazingly twisted take on Jazz music from time to time. He's not really rock, he's everything.

Oh and The Jon Spencer Blue's Explosion - and I am led to believe they changed their name as well. But its very interesting music.

I love old blues from around the 30's and 40's. I could listen to it all day.

I love jazz that is without vocals. I don't need some diva
wailing like Mariah Carey and ruining the song for me.

Try "Blue Train" by John Coltrane; the title song has a very
catchy riff. Then "Wheelin' and Dealin'" by Coltrane and
Frank Weiss.

Gerry Mulligan's "Night Lights" is ideal romantic piano jazz.

As for Bossa Nova...hmmm...

i loooooove tom waits. unclassifiable. he's just... tom waits

béla bartók, bach, liszt, rachmaninov... some opera, i lived in vienna and went regularly. there's still stuff i hate, like most wagner and aida and carmina burana, but some are wonderful like oedipus rex and nabucco and salomé.

moomies, check out the brazilian classics: antonio carlos jobim, joao and astrud gilberto, caetano veloso, chico buarque, vinicius de moraes, toquinho, baden powell, jorge ben, maria bethania... 'jazz samba', the stan getz/gilberto album is a must, as well as vinicius de moraes en 'la fusa', a great live album with toquinho and maria creuza

if you want something more recent, check out seu jorge's album. he played pele in the life aquatic, he was the one singing bowie songs in portuguese. his stuff's a bit funkier.

Well, opera is a given, since it's the profession I hope to exert! Most Wagner, Mozart, Strauss and Rossini.

Thrash, Folk, and Neoclassical metal, some goth, blues, jazz (with vocals, modern, progressive jazz can be as technically brilliant as it is, but it also makes me go to sleep in about 30 seconds.)

And however you classify artists like Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert, Buckethead, etc. Shred? Meh.

Thank you sooo sooo much for the info!!! I'll look into these artists. I just find Bossa Nova very soothing.

Classical and salsa.
There are many styles of salsa... cuban, puertorican, colombian, jazzy... I like them all. Some f my favourites are: Jerry Galante, Puertorican Power, Afro-Cuban Allstars, Tito Puente, Mark Anthony, Frankie Negron, Africando (jazzy, long improvisations), Paquito Guzman (salsa romantica), La India, Jerry Rivera, Tito Nieves... and many more!!!
