College-Age Person Who Never Heard of the Doors
I was talking recently with a 20-year old guy (I'm 35), and I mentioned the rock band The Doors (late 60's, early 70's). He said he had never heard of them! I then asked if he knew who Jim Morrison was; again, never heard of him.
Is this typical? I thought everyone knew about bands like the Doors (not to mention The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, etc). Even if you don't like their music, it seems that you should at least know about these groups.
Needless to say, it made me feel oooooold.

Re: College-Age Person Who Never Heard of the Doors
Both of my 17 year old cousins know who the Doors are. I'm going to guess the guy was a) deliberately trying to make you feel old or b) just ignorant.

Hell, I met a 22-year-old a while back at a folk festival who'd never heard of the Rolling Stones. He was serious, too.

Re: College-Age Person Who Never Heard of the Doors
I know plenty of 20 year old that know who the Doors are. He was just sheltered.
My told me recently that one of his professors showed them a survey in class, that XX% of college kids don't know what a record is...but everyone in class knew exactly what a record was and many of them owned records.
So... yeah, some people are just ignorant. I blame their parents.

I listened to The Doors when I was 8, it's not about age, but everybody should at least know who they are!
And I can't wrap my mind around someone not knowing who the Rolling Stones are...is that even possible?

See, he probably considers Limp Bizkit to be rock gods. Don't feel downheartened or old. I'm 20 and everyone I know has not only heard of the Doors, we all either have their CD's or their songs in our MP3 collections. He's just an idiot.

Re: College-Age Person Who Never Heard of the Doors
I think it's cool that kids are learning about older music. My oldest daughter discovered Al Green last year...they love the Doors, Pink Floyd...lots of the music I listened to growing up. It is funny for my youngest daughter (she is 15) to ask me if I know who Bob Segar is!! DUH!!
We listen to the same kind of music now-we all like a variety of music, Although I don't care for the dirty rap shit they like...some is ok, but most of it is so vulgar...

Re: College-Age Person Who Never Heard of the Doors
My 2 oldest children, 14 and 11, have to know who The Doors are or their uncle would lose his mind! His favorite band. He was so into them that he believed he WAS Morrison reincarnated! lol
My 11yro LOVES Ozzy. Black Sabbath. My 14 yro loves Zeppelin. My 5 yro want for his Christmas present mind you, to see AC/DC in concert.
My 8 month old can't decide yet.....

Re: College-Age Person Who Never Heard of the Doors
This will scare you. A friend of mine in New York City was in a record store (yes, an actual record store, it was a long time ago which makes this even more frightening) and was going through the bins of records. There were two teeny bopper girls near her who were going through some Paul McCarthy albums and one of them goes, "Oh look Paul was in another band before Wings." (???!!! Another band? like, the Beatles?)

Re: College-Age Person Who Never Heard of the Doors
I'm 22 and grew up on The Doors, Zeppelin, The Clash, Pink Floyd, The Who, Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Radiobirdman, The Saints etc. Its funny though, I had to give my dad (where my musical tastes come from) a musical education. He had insisted for so long that The Sex Pistols and The Clash weren't punk. It took a book and a long explination of Punk Rock for him to finally get it.
Most of my friends wouldnt know the music if they heard it. But then again, I wouldnt know most of their music if I heard it.

Re: College-Age Person Who Never Heard of the Doors
Slightly OT but we watched a Biography channel programme about The Village People and afterwards my husband asked in all seriousness "Ohhh so were they gay then?" But his rock credentials are sound, he's a Hendrix and Stones fan and Pink Floyd will be played at his funeral.

Re: College-Age Person Who Never Heard of the Doors
Your upbringing has alot to do with it.
I come from immigrant parents and was rarely allowed out of my house; nor allowed to listen to anything but the local radio station.
I'm 36 now and have only known who The Doors are for about 15 years. My sisters husband listened to them all the time and was beyond shocked that my sister and I had never heard of them (we were 20 and 21).
Of course, I can now tell you every song by them and know every word.
