Default December 8, 1980.....horrible horrible day and still is 25 yrs later

As most of us know, tomorrow is the 25th Anniversary of John Lennons premature death.
I know there are some Beatle fans on the board, so I thought we could all remember together, even if you aren't a huge fan.

I didn't find out until Tuesday Dec 9th, when I woke up. I was in a GREAT mood because it was my 10th birthday! And I went to eat breakfast I saw my oldest brother, who was 17, and was up already (VERY RARE since he was never up early), and he had his head in his hands while sitting at the table. I was like HELLO? ITS MY BIRTHDAY! He just looked up and said 'John Lennon was killed last night--which means the Beatles will never get back together' as sad as I ever heard him sound. And I was like what? I knew of him, knew the Beatles, but was mostly shocked by my brothers reaction...and when we watched the news that night, the entire broadcast was almost entirely devoted to Lennon. There were THOUSANDS of people crying, camping out at the Dakota w/candles and signs, SINGING!! I thought to myself that this was a very interesting, talented person who obviously moved a great many person. So I made it my mission to find out more, to seek his music out. And I did.
What a horrible horrible loss for the music world, for the charity world, for activism, for peace! Can you imagine how he would be involved in the various issues for the last 25 yrs???
We were robbed of the biggest talent of our time....and I am still PISSED.

Anyone else???

Hm. Today is Pearl Harbor day, but google doesn't even have anything up.

Not trivializing John Lennon, just an observation.

when I remembered pearl harbor today i had to call my Nonna, he was a war hero and his health and mind are failing at 89, I just want him to know that I really appreciate what he did for my country; back when war meant something and they were fighting for a real and true cause.

You know what Frank & Alice, you are absolutely right: I totally forgot it's Pearl Harbor Day. Today is also my cousin and friends birthdays, so I tend to just recall that and nothing else. And yet I knew it was Pearl Harbor Day too.
Christ, I've been to Pearl Harbor and it is HAUNTING!!!! And incredibly sad...so many young military lives lost--in an instant!!!

I just had tunnel 'vision' so to speak about the John Lennon thing, because there is so much press already about it. Though, there SHOULD be press about Pearl Harbor Day too.....but maybe because it's the 25th Anniversary of his death that it is all the more prevalant....

It's sad that two sombre anniversaries -- one tragic (Dec. 8),
the other calamitous (Dec. 7) -- should appear back-to-back
in our calendar.

I didn't realize how much we'd lost with Lennon until a few months
after his death, when I heard "Imagine" -- it was like, oh, that's
John Lennon! He was great!...and we lost him.

As for Pearl Harbor, I remember an episode of Brady Bunch where
the boys go out to the floating memorial over the Arizona with their
father and observe a moment of silence. That's something I ought to
consider doing in the future.

Well, it's not even 8 am on the East Coast and I have already cried...PMS is a terrrible thing I swear. All these morning shows keep showing montage's of clips of John Lennon and playing his songs and interviews, etc. Sucks....

I wasn't even born when he died, but I still think it's really, really sad... the world lost someone important that day, and I hope his killer rots in jail for what he's done.

I am definitely not a fan of the Beatles - nor John Lennon, so I don't share the sentiment at all. Howeve, I did notice that no one pays attention to Pearl Harbor, which makes me sad considering how many people lost their lives there, and during the war. I guess it just shows that the older people are dying, and the younger don't care.

I also noticed no one remembered Dime's murder, one year ago, on the same date.

I was working nights, and when I got home at midnight someone called me and said that John had been killed. I remember the next few days were like being in a fog, people were so sad, and not long after it happened I had to be in New York and saw the Dakota with all the flowers and stuff that fans left. It must have been only a few weeks after he was killed, because it was before Christmas. And a day or two after he died, they had a moment of silence, and everyone just stopped and stood ther, even in New York, and people just cried. What a waste of a talented life.

Very sad day. I didn't hear much Lennon on the radio today, either. You'd think the 25th Anniversary of a music legend would garner a little more attention.

I thought it was poignant that Paul McCartney was nominated for a Grammy this morning, though.

I was not/am not a fan of John Lennon or the Beatles either, but it is sad that an innocent man was shot, in front of his wife by a crazed man.

It's sad when ONE innocent man dies... or when THOUSANDS of innocent people die.
