I have not a single one of these (technically speaking, the Zeppelin albums belong to my mother's friend's boyfriend's son).

of the ones listed i have 'dark side of the moon' and 'sgt pepper'.

it kind of varies depending on people's age but i think most people i know, either my age or my parents' age, own at least half of these:
    the beatles - 'abbey road'
the rolling stones 'sticky fingers', or else that 2cd best of compilation
    jeff buckley 'grace'
    the pulp fiction soundtrack
war - 'the world is a ghetto'
    the police - greatest hits
    that abba gold compilation
    the velvet underground and nico
the beach boys - either a best of compliation or 'pet sounds'
    radiohead - 'ok computer'
    massive attack - 'mezzanine'
    nirvana - 'nevermind'
can't stand them but so many people of all ages have a coldplay album
leonard cohen - 'songs of love and hate'
    carole king - 'tapestry'
bob dylan - a best of or 'blonde on blonde' or 'highway 61 revisited'
marvin gaye - 'what's going on'
U2 - 'war' or 'achtung baby' or 'zooropa'
    the doors - 'the doors'
simon and garfunkel - greatest hits or 'bridge over troubled water'
    pink floyd - 'the wall'
    the buena vista social club
the fugees (the one with 'killing me softly'), or lauryn hill unplugged
    weezer - the blue album

Hmm, I have DSotM and Weezer's Blue Album (I have the Green Album too), but that's really it. I do have songs off of most of those albums on my computer, but I don't really buy CDs.

I can check off about half of the albums listed, plus songs off many of the others. Looks like you folks are on to something.

    MARIAH CAREY!!!

Someone with the taste to have all those other albums should not have MC.

Its like having a cellar of Moet, Veuve, Dom Perignon, Krug and Passion Pop!

Anyway Radioheads 'The Bends' is better than OK Computer IMO.

U2 Album should be either Joshua Tree, Achtung or All that you cant leave behind.

You need some hard stuff so you cant go past AC/DC Back in Black ( It's funny how AC/DC fans always carry on about how much better Bon Scott was - but agree that BIB first with Brian Johnston was their best album )

Stings - Dream of the Blue turtles.

    GREATEST HITS ARE COMPILATIONS PEOPLE!!!

So Abba Gold, Best of Police etc are for people who kind of like the singles but never appreciated the Albums.

take OK Computer, Revolver, Sgt Peppers ( Consistently Top 10 'best album ever' ) now take the singles of them and make a compilation - is that better than the albums you took them from?

Meh - I never thought Sgt Pepper was all that. I preferred their earlier stuff like Revolver or Rubber Soul. MrAO likes The White Album which is way too obscure and druggy for me.

And I prefer Sting's later stuff, esp The Soul Cages and Brand New Day, but I'm a Sting tragic so everything he's done is flawless IMO. His new CD, Songs From the Labyrinth, is out in October. Yum.

Forgive my ignorance but is there a 'definitive' Metallica album? My son is dead set on becoming an emo and apparently Metallica is the band du jour among his emo mates at school.

Oh come ON. We've all got stuff we're too embarrassed to admit to, but which everyone has anyway, eg Neil Diamond

Ok, the title of the thread is ALBUMS. These are the ALBUMS that I have, somewhere, upstairs in a closet.

Sgt. Peppers (the Bee Gees movie version)
    2 Carpenters albums
Captain & Tennille something or other
    Boston, first 2
    Eagles, Hotel California
    Super 70's (hodge-podge o'stuff)
    Saturday Night Fever
    The Rose (movie soundtrack)

    Is that sufficiently horrifying?
