Default Back to Basics - Christina Aguilera

OK, I'll admit it. I have the album, I burned it from a friend. I've been listening to it in the car and ya know what? I'm starting to actually love it. The album has 2 very different styles to it. The first half of it is a lot like the Ain't No Other Man style, where it's the upbeat music with a prominent beat, and the second half is mostly ballads (except a song called Candyman that samples that traditional carnival music and is kinda fun). There's also a really good song at the end that was written about her wedding day (it's called The Right Man), I almost cried the first time I heard it

The Right Man

So many years have gone by
Always strong, tried not to cry
Never felt like I needed any man
To comfort me in life
But I'm all made up today
A veil upon my face
But no father stands beside me
To give this bride away

Well I'm standing in the chapel
Wearing my white dress
I have waited for this moment
With tears of happiness
Here I leave behind my past
By taking the chance
I've finally found the right man

Thoughts racing fast through my mind
As I'm gazing down the aisle
That my future will mend the memories
Torn between father and child

My emotions overload
'Cause there is no hand to hold
There's no shoulder here to lean on
I'm walking all on my own

Here I go

Now I'm standing at four corners
To have and to hold
Now my love, you stand beside me
To walk life's winding road
And I owe it all to you
For taking the chance
You've shown me there's a right man
'Cause I never knew a right man

Well I'm standing in the chapel
Ready to confess
That I've waited for this moment
With tears of happiness
Now I leave behind my past
By taking the chance

Ohh

Well I'm standing at four corners
To have and to hold
Now my love, you stand beside me
To walk life's winding road
And I owe it all to you
For taking the chance

And one day my little girl
Will reach out her hand
She'll know I found the right man

Well that's b/c you're a special blogger, I'm not, I had to burn it from a friend

I like it a lot, but I love most things that are influnced by the music of the past. I guess I feel like it shows the artist is serious about music rather than throwing together random crap.

I like the CD. I was thrown back a bit at the 'old' sound of it, but it was a pleasant surprise. It truly is a CD that honors the old 20's, 30's and 40's singers and it says a lot about Christina's taste in music. She clearly does not want to get stuck in any one genre. I think she's trying to establish early on that she wants to be an artist that can sing ANYTHING and this CD was extremely brave of her to do. My hats off to her. You'd have to be fool to not notice that she clearly favors all types of music and her tastes cover the entire musical spectrum. That surprises me considering her age, but it's wonderful that she uses influences from all types of music. I really think she's so much more developed as a singer than Britney Spears and most of the pop stars out there now.

I love those lyrics. Just reading them got me teary-eyed.

You know what I like about Christina? That you just never know what you're going to get with her. Mariah has a beautiful voice, but you more or less always knew the type of music she was going to record, you knew her sound and the type of music you were getting if you bought one of her CD's. With Christina, each CD is so different from the next. She's extremely versatile. I love artists who constantly re-define themselves and refuse to be pigeon-holed.

I loved the CD. I think you have to like that sort of music to begin with to have an appreciation for it. But, I'm sure not everyone will like it and that it won't be everyone's cup of tea.

I think that I've read some stuff that pretty much said "it's not my style, but you have to respect her for it". Even if you didn't like that music to begin with, she did a great job reinventing it for the album. The only song I ever skip is the "thank you" track.
