Image Matters Much More These Days, Laments Paul Simon

Paul Simon blames MTV for preventing many gifted musicians from enjoying successful careers because he believes the influential pop channel places the focus on image instead of talent. The veteran singer/songwriter, 64, insists he would never have made it in today's looks-obsessed climate.
He says, "In the 1960s you had to be a moron not to be successful in the music business. I was fortunate that it was the time I emerged. It's different today, a lot harder. It changed when record companies became corporate, and the corporations merged. There were five labels where there used to be 15, then the five became three. Then all the stations got bought up. That meant the end of the unusual hits.
"Everything became what the format dictated. MTV had a lot to do with it, because how telegenic you were mattered as much as how well you played and sang."

He may be short, bald and old but yep, he's totally right. Everything's about packaging these days, it's all smoke and mirrors. And "live" concerts ceased to be just that in the eighties for many artists, I guess

I'd say that most contemporary musicians are little better than
karaoke singers -- they didn't grow up with the musicians who are
playing behind them, they don't know the musicians or the songwriters,
    they just sing and leave.

Many of the great bands that we idolize were great because their
work was the result of colliding personalities. Of course there were
clashes -- what is life without conflict? -- but when the great minds
met and worked out their differences, their collaborations were magic.

We need more bands that grew up together in Liverpool or London.

Sounds like someone hopped aboard the Bitter Train! Choo Choo!

I loves me some Paul Simon by the way and I love that he married Edie Brickell.

Has anyone heard his new CD? The reviews are quite good.

He was just on the 'Today' show (I think that was the show) and looked like SHIT. I mean, BAD. But, he's not doing the 'baseball hat' thing anymore and letting the real hair, what he has left, all hang out. Its not pretty.

    Sounded great though!

I agree - caught him briefly on TV and thought 'no, it can't be....' Though I hate when men go bald, they let the rest of the hair go long.
