Default Greatest rock songs of the 1980s

5 songs which you think are the best of the 1980s. not necessarily the most popular but songs which you think are gorgeous and musically important.

i disagree the 80s was all crap. sure, some of it was. but what about bands like the smiths, the cure, talking heads, roxy music, cocteau twins, x, jane's addiction, the fall, elvis costello, the pogues, r.e.m, pixies, prince, run dmc, beastie boys, the stone roses, violent femmes, sonic youth, new order, tom waits, joy division?

    the smiths - cemetery gates

talking heads - burning down the house

Queen & david bowie - under pressure

modern english - i melt with you

the cars - my best friend's girl

the cure - just like heaven

tom waits - innocent when you dream

ok, that's 7 and i could add more. the cure had so many gorgeous songs in the 80s, it was hard to choose between them all - 'a forest', 'boys don't cry', 'plainsong', 'pictures of you' are just as gorgeous.

the list doesn't feel complete without r.e.m's 'pretty persuasion' and 'the one i love'

tom waits' entire output in the 80s was genius, it's hard to pick one song. i finally went with 'innocent when you dream' not just because of how incredibly gorgeous it is but because it's perhaps more accessible to those who aren't waits fans. there's also the beautiful 'downtown train' which most people think is a rod stewart song - thanks to his shitty cover version.

and i finally chose 'cemetry gates' for the smiths because it's perhaps the most representative and shows all the different facets of the band - the happy lyrics juxtaposed to the heavier lyrics, morrissey's genius and sense of humour. but it could just as easily have been 'the boy with the thorn in his side', 'there is a light that never goes out' or 'frankly, mr. shankly'

'white wedding' is awesome but i'm partial to 'dancing with myself', and the gen x version is even better than billy's solo version.
