Re: Save Dustin Diamond (aka Screech/Saved By the Bell) and his house!
I know this is really old, but I just had to post to say that I just watched one of the late night reruns of this morning cable tv show (Urban Rush for the Vancouverites) and Michael Eckford, one of the hosts ordered 2. It's $15 for just the tshirt, and $20 if you want it signed eh? So he paid $40US for two shirts, and he opened the package live on tv! Aaaaand, it only had one shirt in it! LOL. He was ripped off by Screech, and it happened on live (well, live at the time it was aired originally at like 6am) tv! Ahahaha. He even went and brought up his Paypal account statement to show that he paid $40! LMAO.

I was watching a show on E! today about Child celebs, and on comes Screech and his campaign. 1) He has a huge house (about 4 bedrooms or so) with really nice furniture inside and 2) He was saying how he and his girlfriend/fiance/whatever, had a tough last year because they didn't have insurance and she ended up having an encoptic pregnancy. Ok - well that sucks, but by my calculations - two adults capable of getting regular jobs are living in that house for the 3 years they were there. Instead Dustin spends his time doing his stand-up routine, and has his girlfriend goes along with him. I don't feel sorry for him that he can't budget his money correctly, or that both he and his girlfriend seem to be perfectly fine leeching off people who send in $15.00. Oh, and he also had his neighbors helping him with the folding and packing of those stupid shirts.

I COULD NOT AGREE MORE.
It is possible he lied to E! about the circumstance surrounding the house - that he owned it, instead of something like “renting to own”. But it takes A LOT to buy a house, infact when I bought mine it was a bitch and a half. There was ALWAYS something else to sign, get approved for, spend money on, another scheduling problem, etc.
You have to WORK to own a home, if you figure out you cant afford it later, like you lose your job, or have some major medical problems - then you SALE THE HOME and get something you can afford. My husband and I are facing the same problem. With our insurance increases and property tax, our monthly payments have gone up $200 more a month then our first year - and unfortunately our pay has pretty much stayed the same. But then again, I still managed my money, maybe we go without eating for a couple of days or without a phone for a while - but mortgage still gets paid.
And I am not auctioning off shirts to save my house.

So many people I know will say with disapproval "ugh you could use ur rent money to pay ur mortgage and then ud OWN the house and have equity, instead ur paying someone else's mortgage"
NOT TRUE, i tell them OR they say "omg you pay Xgs/mth on rent, do u know what kind of house you could have with a mortgage like that"
my oppinion, not saying that people who dont agree are wrong, just sharing my views:
first of all rent is a flat fee , there are ZERO MAINTANENCE costs (so if the roof caves in NOT my problem, if the pipes burst NOT my problem, if the fridge breaks NOT my problem). I have ZERO property taxes and ZERO association fees. Some people say "yeah but all that money is going into ur equity so its worth it", well Id RATHER take that money and throw it in the bank where it lies in the form of CA$H rather than equity that can depreciate. Owning anything is a liability in my book, esp a home u LIVE in that can turn from an "investment" to a "money pit" before ur eyes
my husband and I owned and got so annoyed with our inept association that we just said screw it and we now live in a gorgeous magnificent home that we lease/option...owning did nothing for me. I also sold my home for a great amt and was very happy with that aspect, but still i felt we got "lucky"
sounds like screech needs to re read rich dad poor dad =)

^^^ I agree but only partially. I am in the process of selling my home and going to a rental because I want more immediate cashflow for investing in something other than a house.
When you own a house - you are paying the taxes, mortgag meanwhile if you rent, you still are paying taxes, it is just rolled up with your mortgage. The other thing is that no matter what - your payments will always be the same for the house (on a fixed rate loan), however your rent is guaranteed to go up each year.
Now, what I like about renting is that you can sometimes get places that cover water/sewer/garbage - which in my case saves $400.00 in the winter.

In my case, property taxes are over 40gs/year and and association fee is nearly 20gs/year...Ill take the rental increase here and there to avoid those major expenses

Actually I have a fixed rate, and my payments change because escrow is included in my payment. Insurance & taxes pretty much only go up.
And a common problem many face is most mortgage companies approve a loan for roughly about twice your annual income. So *technically* you are paying ATLEAST half your monthly income on your home.
Not to mention still having to pay your own phone, cable, water, and electric bill - and depending on what apartments, townhouses, or condos you have, some of those things are already wrapped into your monthly rental payment.
AND AGAIN - If the A/C goes out, plumbing gets backed up, roof leak, etc - you do not have to pay for it when you arent the one who owns the property! Not to mention having the bothersome things such as checking for mold, wood rott, watering the yard, cutting the yard, etc.
*** BTW***
I saw the E! story on child celebrities - Where are the now, and they had a partial story about Dustin's house saving efforts. I believe they said the house was a 4 bedroom/ 2 bath. And as they were talking to Dustin, he reveals that they had paid a lot of money for medical bills when his wife had an etopic pregnancy.
And apparently they didnt have any other children. So why do they need 4 bedrooms? And even if they did end up having a child - I count: 1-2 children = ONE room.
And I couldnt help but notice on the show, when they showed the inside of the house, they had very nice new looking couches, chairs, and a coffee table. They also had a HUGE wood entertainment enter - like the 3 piece ones with bookshelves on the side, and a big screen TV.
Hum, it seems more and more like a person just living beyond thier means.

^^^ That was the same show I watched! While I felt bad about the medical part - I kept looking at the size of the house, the location, and the furniture and kept thinking that he was totally buying over his head. I don't feel sorry for him at all.
I don't know if you noticed the end part, but it did say that the owner and Dustin did work out something, so why he still has his site up seems very greedy to me.

I saw the same, a little “blurb” written after the segment, like E! managed to get the info right before it aired.
But here’s my problem:
On the blurb the mentioned something that struck me as Dustin was working something out with the “owner”. OK, as a homeowner, I pay a mortgage company for the loan that bought me the house (kind of the same deal as buying a car - you don’t own it until you pay it off from the bank). So if ANYONE would have a validated threat to remove me off the property is only CountryWide Mortgage (if I didn’t pay my loan to them) or Nueces County - who is responsible for the land tax.
With me, and most people in America - which includes Dustin, having a problem with your loan/mortgage company is just not paying on the loan for your home. Until you have “paid off your mortgage (i.e. all the money you borrowed from the bank to buy the home) you aren’t the owner. But that is much a different animal then what was presented.
Dustin seemed to be “renting to own” more then actually taking out a loan, to buy a home, in his own name.
