there is rent control in SF and berkeley but not in other areas like silicon valley and marin.

but the rents in SF have still sky-rocketed.

They have rent control in NYC too, but private homes don't fall under that umbrella.

In spite of the high rents in W. Hollywood I am glad we live here because it's an unincorporated city with rent-control. One street south of us and it's L.A. city proper, which doesn't do rent control.

Don't you sign a lease that the rent stays the same till the lease is up?

Yes, but the lease is for a year, after that it usually goes month to month, unless you sign a new lease.
Since they are not rent controlled, there is no limit to how much they can raise the rent. One landlord was telling me about the ARM he had & how much the payments increased about 2 months before our lease was up. He was hoping that we would stay & absorb his increased mortgage (almost $200), no thanks.

My Uncle in Law lives in NYC, Upper West Side. When I visited him about 7 years ago he told me that they paid $750 for their studio apartment!! That was 1/2 of what I used to pay for a 2 bedroom in Portland. Gotta LOVE rent control! Though, he also said that they basically can't afford to move anywhere else. Why leave such an insane deal!?

I grew up in a one bedroom rent stabilized apartment. Last year my parents bought their first house. After 36 years in the same apartment, rent was $810 including the fee to have a washer in the apartment and the replacement cost of the fridge I lit on fire when I was 15.

Market rent on the apartment was nearly $1,500 but only that low because it's the Bronx.

    Brandi Glanville -- 'Housewives' Producers Will Un-Fire Her, IF ... | TMZ.com

    Brandi Glanville
'Housewives' Producers will Un-Fire Her, IF ...
6/19/2015 12:31 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

    EXCLUSIVE
Brandi Glanville can win a reprieve from the producers of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" if she plays nice as an occasional guest ... TMZ has learned.

As we reported, Brandi got the ax Thursday after producers decided she was just too much trouble. Brandi was difficult and erratic on the set, fighting -- sometimes physically -- with other castmates.

But sources connected with the show tell us, they are not going to immediately replace her. They're hoping Brandi views this as a "Come to Jesus," and if she comes back for occasional visits, she can prove to them she can act appropriately enough so she doesn't get in the way of production.

It mirrors what happened to Porsha Williams on "The Real Housewives of Atlanta." Porsha got demoted because of bad behavior, made occasional appearances afterward and rehabilitated herself enough to come back as a cast member.

It's Brandi's decision now ... she has to decide if she'll eat crow and accept a reduced role ... and presumably reduced pay.

That's probably a lifeline for her. She should take it.

Brandi Glanville -- Tries to Save Face in 'RHOBH' Firing | TMZ.com

Brandi Glanville Tries to Save Face In 'RHOBH' Firing
6/24/2015 1:45 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

    http://www.tmz.com/videos/0_092wplpw

Brandi Glanville says she's willing to give 'Real Housewives' a second chance -- if the show wants to give her one, which is cute ... since producers already cut her, but sounds like she's still available.

Glanville went on her podcast and announced the news TMZ already broke last week -- that she's leaving 'RHOBH,' but she made it seem like it was her decision, not the show's.
As we also told you, Bravo was open to having her as an occasional guest next season. Check out the clip -- Brandi's either totally up for that, or telling her old bosses ... thanks, but no thanks. It's hard to tell ... especially since she offered a cryptic hint about what else she might do for money.
We'll miss you, Brandi ... and your nipple, too.

She obviously has a grammar editor for this. I just don't see her knowing about the apostrophe.

RHOBH's Brandi Glanville wears see-through skirt as she’s escorted by two men | Daily Mail Online

Brandi Glanville, 42, wears see-through skirt as she's escorted by two men during night of partying in Hollywood after being 'fired' off RHOBH
    By Dailymail.com Reporter
    Published: 14:12 EST, 28 June 2015 | Updated: 15:36 EST, 28 June 2015

She's best known as one of the Chardonnay-sipping, trash-talking beauties on Bravo's hit series The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills.

But Brandi Glanville was recently rumored to have been fired from the show, although she claimed she willingly quit.

The 42-year-old proved that she's not letting the news get her down as she was seen out on the town Saturday night wearing a skimpy see-through skirt and in the arms of two unidentified gentlemen.

Night out: Brandi Glanville, 42, was spotted wearing a see-through skirt during a night out in Los Angeles on Saturday

Brandi was all smiles as she walked through Los Angeles with the two men.

She wore a cleavage-friendly black blouse and a see-through skirt for the night out.

The skirt revealed the reality TV star's shapely legs and even her scantily-clad derriere.

She also wore a pair of black Christian Louboutin heels.

Mystery men: The fromer Bravo beauty was escorted by two unidentified young men as they crossed the street

Cheeky: The skirt showed off the reality star's toned legs and also her derriere

Brandi is a mother-of-two but a single women, having divorced from Eddie Cibrian in 2010.

So it isn't a shock that the reality star was seen with two gentlemen - whom Brandi walked with arm and arm.

However, they appeared to be very youthful young men, likely younger than the 42-year-old Glanville.

The blonde gentleman wore a casual button-down and jeans; he was seen smiling and even flashing the surfer 'hang loose' hand gesture.

And the other paired a blazer and tie with black jeans.

Calling it quits: The mother-of-two announced on Tuesday that she will no longer be appearing on Bravo's hit TV show The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills. She claims it was her choice to leave but her co-stars believe she was fired

Just last week, Brandi announced her departure from the hit Bravo reality show, The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills.
She took to her podcast on Tuesday, asserting claims that the separation was her decision.

However, her former co-stars beg to differ.

Lie detectors: RHOB stars Kyle Richards and Lisa Vanderpump believe that Glanville was actually fired from the show. The two are seen here on Wednesday, when they expressed their disbelief, as they finished lunch

RHOBH stars Kyle Richards and Lisa Vanderpump were spotted leaving lunch on Wednesday as they expressed their doubts about Brandi's claim.

When questioned by TMZ about Brandi's departure, Kyle scoffed: 'Truth cannon my a**,' mocking Brandi's self-proclaimed nickname on the show.

And the ever elegant Brit, Lisa, simply called the whole thing a 'crock of poo.'
