I couldn't imagine acting the way some of those girls do. I couldn't reduce myself to being a sexual plaything just so males would pay attention to me. It's just disgusting. And who is going to respect someone who has no respect for themselves? I think it's beyond just a need to be young, wild and free. I think these people have serious psychological disturbances that need to be dealt with.

I'm apart of the gen that probably helped to start this whole bullshit. I have a split friend base: thoes who do and thoes who dont.
Thoes who do tell me either its because they're just more comfortable expressing their sexuality with girls, because its the easiest way for them to get a guys attention or because it expresses their 'kinky side'.
None of which I understand because none of it makes any freaking sense.
Why would you want the attention of guy who's only going to give you attention if you act like a giant slut?
Why would you want to go out into a public place, get trashed and be kinky? And is it really being kinky if you're drunk in the first place?
And if you're more comfortable with girls then guys then...doesnt that make you a lesbian?
I get it when you're trying to learn how to kiss. Hell i've done that. When I was younger, go to the older friend, get advice, learn how to kiss. Nothing more nothing less. But even i am disgusted by girls my own age.

OK, I'll throw my hat into the ring...
I'm a sociology student, and there's a concept going about at the moment called the 'pornographication of the mainstream'. It's to do with strip clubs being seen as acceptable, about teenage girls going around with Playboy bunnies on their clothing, about how it's now cool to shave your genitals, and I'd personally consider the girls kissing thing to be part of it.
Thing is, I'd class myself as bisexual, but I reckon that the main reason that I find women attractive is because they are presented in such a sexualised way by the media. During my teens and early twenties, I would go home with some strange women, but I would never kiss my friends. There was the big taboo at school about being seen as a 'lesbo', which complicated things back in the day.
My kid sister works as a stripper (yeah, classy I know, she's a feminist, hates herself and is suicidal, but hey..). She's also gay. When it comes to putting on these fake 'lesbian' shows for stag nights, etc, none of the 'heterosexual' strippers actually want to perform with her - in case she might really be enjoying it!!
Pretty fucked up.

I'm waiting for men to start doing this. Then maybe I'll be impressed!
You won't see it. Men,for all their faults, will never be as desperate as women. They will never collectively demean themselves and go against their nature (especially in public) just to get some fleeting female attention. That is why they rule the world and we don't. Which is kind of funny, since men are primarily driven by the desire to have sex with women. Thanks to cheesy pathetic sluts like these they don't even have to work that hard.

Well seems to me also, that men, for the most part like being respected by their peers. The girls who will kiss other girls to get the guys to like them aren't interested in respect, just attention.

Excellent point. Girls don't seem to care about respect anymore, just 'is anybody lusting after me?'. That's the only status symbol that matters.

Good points...it seems like it's all about competition with other girls. Being skinnier than other girls, wearing better clothes than other girls, being "hotter" than other girls. I guess in their minds the gauge of "hotness factor" is how many guys want to ogle and grope them. Regardless of the fact that the guys just see these girls as horny sluts.
It's sort of narcissistic in a way, isn't it? The attitude of "I don't care if you like me, as long as you're jealous of me".
I would hate to be a young single woman in this day and time if that's what it's like. I just never had the self-consciousness that these girls seem to have. There was some aspect of competition with other girls, but not to the extent that we had to compromise our dignity.

I find it pretty alienating when straight women behave this way only to get attention. I feel like I live on another plane altogether.
One of the criticisms of television and cinema right from their inception is that women are portrayed through the 'male gaze'. Take for example how a woman's character is based on her sexuality, with a few characteristics thrown in here and there that are rather uneven.
What we are talking about here- the increasing trend of straight women making out in mass media could possibly attributed to the 'male gaze' too. No wonder girls in the act think it will catch a man's attention.

And may I say self-consciousness is something most girls today, including myself battle. We have been made to believe that our worth is equivalent to our 'hotness'. And most of us dont know because it is never directly told, but implied in an unreal storyline.

Thanks so much for these insightful comments. Im thrilled so many ppl replied!
Esp those regarding the "male gaze" (I learned about that in college, I was a womens studies minor) and the "pornification of the mainstream" which is a relatively new phenomenon.
So much of it is women thinking "our worth is equivalent to our hotness" and other women are something to compete with.
I think it goes along with the cult of celebrity in this era. Part of having all the cool brands (LV, dior, whatever) and the other things most women can't afford. which plays into the crazy debt young ppl get into. Mtv really perpetuates this. the whole lohan, paris, britney thing.
Its like a "stripper" culture, where strip clubs aren't really scandelous, they're just another stop on the pub crawl.

Excellent post, crumpet. ITA.
Apparently many females *think* (a-hem...) that sexual display empowers them or makes them "equal" in some way.
The reality is that it places women to a lower level than ever before IMO.
Call me "old fashioned", but I really do appreciate the idea of self respect. And just respect in general, actually.

Completely agree about women's self-worth being equated with the level of "hotness." And I'm so sickened by it, because of course it's all b.s. and just contributes to girls' low self-esteem.
This is a very large part of the reason I hate celebrities like Britney and Paris: it perpetuates a shallow and superficial ideal. Like it doesn't matter how fucked up you are, or even if you're fundamentally happy with your life--as long as you're perceived as "hot," that's all that matters. Please.

And the fact that so many young women look up to Paris and actually take her seriously is just staggering.
She promotes having an empty head, nothing interesting to say, playing dumb, looking as much like a barbie as you can, shopping like its your job, partying constantly . . .
I think a lot of young women think its normal to "party" and get drunk a lot in hs and college. At what point do they say to themselves, gee maybe Im an alkie?
But going back to my original post, I guess it goes back to the idea that women are valued by their looks and men are vauled by their money/power.
Women are valued by how sexy they are and who they can attract, and that includes wearing the "ho" uniform (Christina Agulliera anyone?). And men will often lie to appear more rich or having more status.
Dave Chappelle has a funny bit about the nasty outfits women wear when he would go out to clubs. "you may not be a whore . . . but you are wearing a whore's uniform!!" Love that line!

I love that line by Chapelle too! At the risk of sounding anti-feminist, it's true!
Also, the standards of the "whore's uniform" are constantly being dropped. Years ago, it was going braless and showing lots of cleavage in barely-there tops, then wearing visible thongs hanging out of your pants, now it's flashing your panty-less crotch. Where else is there to go?
