(In)Famous Oscar speeches and quotes
With the Oscars coming on this weekend, here's some (in)famous Oscar
moments from acceptance speeches and (red carpet) quotes of Oscar's past:
1964: Sidney Poitier
"It has been a long journey to this moment."
1970: Cary Grant, Honorary Oscar Recipient
“Thanks. You’re applauding my stamina.”
1973: Presenter David Niven, Post-Streaker
“Just think: The only laugh that man will get in his life is by stripping
off and showing his shortcomings.”
1976: Warren Beatty:
"We want to thank all of you for watching us congratulate
ourselves tonight.”

1979: When Shirley MacLaine approached the podium in
1979, she decided to commiserate with her little brother, Warren Beatty,
who had failed to win any honours for his film, Heaven Can Wait.
" I want to take this opportunity to say how proud I am of my little
brother, my dear, sweet, talented brother. " she said.
" Just imagine what you could accomplish if you tried celibacy!"
When the cameras panned to the renowned ladies' man he looked
suitably mortified, as did his date Diane Keaton.
1984: Sally Field
"I've wanted more than anything to have your respect! The first time
I didn't feel it, but this time I feel it, and I can't deny the fact that you
like me!"
1986: Paul Newman, Best Actor [For The Color Of Money],
“It’s like chasing a beautiful woman for 80 years. Finally she relents and
you say, ‘I’m terribly sorry, I’m tired.’ ”
1999: Angelina Jolie, accepting her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress,
"I'm in shock. And I'm so in love with my brother right now, he just held
me and said he loved me."

Frank Sinatra gave Cary his award. Cary got all teary eyed. True class. 1970
Cary Grant gave Jimmy Stewart his award, 1985. Cary tells the true story of a scene in Philadelphia Story.

Hahaha, the Warren quote is awesome. He's spot on there. Makes me wonder why I watch the fucking Oscars. It's so self indulgent for them... I'm surprised I don't puke.
Angelina must have been on drugs. Who the hell just comes out with 'I'm so in love with my brother right now'. Oh, right.. a pretentious, self important person.

1949: Jane Wyman, on winning for playing a mute character
"I accept this very gratefully for keeping my mouth shut for once,
in Johnny Belinda. I think I'll do it again."
1976: Louise Fletcher
"I'd like to thank Jack Nicholson for making being in a mental institution
like being in a mental institution. I loved being hated by you."

1979: John Wayne (who died later that year of cancer)
"Oscar and I have something in common. Oscar first came to Hollywood
scene in 1928. So did I. We're both a little weather-beaten, but we're
still here and plan to be around for a whole lot longer."
1998: Kim Basinger
"I just want to thank everybody I've ever met in my entire life."
2005: Clint Eastwood, Best Director, Million Dollar Baby
"There's a lot of young guys coming along, but I'd like to
say to the various financiers, don't forget the senior guys.
The senior guys and gals are there, willing to do their best
work for you."

ITA. Award shows embarrass me to death. Also agree about Angelina. The chick must have been high as a friggin' kite.

^Totally! She came out with her brother love from left field. I don't even know why she brought it up. They're just creepy.

Yeah, well, watching them play tonsil hockey was no treat either.
Am I the only one who cannot stand Sally Field's, "You like me! You really like me!" speech?

I've always loved Hitch's...
after years of never winning an Oscar, the academy gave him an honorary one late in life
he walked out, picked it up, said 'thank you', and walked off
it was a beautiful and succinct 'fuck you'
they did it to Chaplin too.....it's like a 'Quick, before he dies' Oscar
