He's either pulling someone's leg or went through with this only because he was contractually obligated and is serious about having had enough of acting.

^^He's either pulling someones leg or loosing his marbles. I couldn't watch that all the way through. I felt too uncomfortable.

I love David! So being "crazy" equates to long hair/beard and sunglasses. Edgy. Blowin my mind Joaquin.

I think he may have blown his own as well. I don't think they should have run with the interview. And I think the audience's hoots of laughter at the sad spectacle of this man made me as equally uncomfortable as the incoherant shambles that was gracing the guest seat. Bad move by all concerned.

He didn't seem incoherent to me, just obstinate. He was very aware he was being made fun of. Even threw a hissy when Dave commented on his gum. He even seemed to be trying to hide a smile at the beginning. I've been around crazy all my life, and he ain't crazy.

@ 2:40 in he appears to repress a smirk while glancing away, so I'm guessing that this is a put on.
on the other hand -

Joaquin Phoenix Will Never Return To Acting
Today 10:39
Joaquin Phoenix has announced that he will never return to acting as he has turned his attention on a music career.
Rumours have circulated that his rap career was a joke but the Oscar nominated star has insisted that his next movie Two Lovers will be his last.
In an interview with The AP Phoenix said: "I'm not one of those people, like, when I break up with my girlfriend, I don't ever see her again.
"I see her as friends, but do I ever think about getting back together? No, when I do something, I do it. So I have no intention."
Phoenix began his career in television back in 1982 but it was his role in Ridley Scott's Gladiator in 2000 that brought him critical acclaim and a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination.
However the role he is most associated with is Walk the Line, where he took on the role of country legend Johnny Cash, a second Oscar nomination came his way for Best Actor.
Back in May 2008 is was announced that Phoenix had been recording some songs with Mike Fox of Little Knickers and Tim Burgess from The Charlatans.

I don't know what to make of it. It wasn't fun to watch at any rate.

To me, he was clearly acting. I found the clip to be very funny. I loved when Dave asked him, "So, how was your time with the Unibomber?"

ummm.... i'm very confused by it.... i hope it was all just a gag of some sort, because it would be upsetting to think it wasn't. I think he's a great actor, I would find it very sad to see him become a tortured & mentally ill person... I know drugs or alcohol dont help that, but i still feel sad watching that DL clip - i too found the audience laughter uncomfortable....

It's a put on for sure. It looked so staged and Letterman is a good straight man the same way Johnny Carson was. Watch the end again where Joaquin removes his glasses and shakes Dave's hand. He was polite and it looks like they thanked each other. Maybe he thought they already went to commercial.
Joaquin is 30 something? What's he going to do for the next 40 years? Rap? He's talented, rich and attractive. He can do whatever he pleases.

I am still hopeful that he is not crazy and is just going through something. I like this guy I think he is/was a great actor.
