There's so much variety in ages on this board that many only know
certain celebrities as old people, has beens maybe, and aren't aware
(if interested at all, lol) of what they were or looked
back when
they were young. A few examples:
Angela Lansbury. For people of my generation (in their early forties)
she's probably best known as the lady from "Murder She Wrote", a
series my mom loved to watch and just maybe as Elvis' mom in
"Blue Hawaii". Born in 1925, she was only 10 years his senior, but
around the same time she played Warren Beatty's mom in another
movie, and she was only 12 years older than him! I also remember
her from the crazy "The Court Jester", with hilarious Danny Kaye.
Here's what she looked like when she was really young, and what
most people visualize when they hear her name.
Never a great beauty in the classical sense, 82 year old Cloris Leachman
was not afraid to turn herself into the ugliest, strangest, zaniest
characters in her many, comedy, performances. Of course, she also did
plenty of serious work, most notedly in "The Last Picture Show". Others
may know her from TV in "Rhoda", "Mary Tyler Moore" or as Nurse Diesel
in Mel Brooks' "High Anxiety" and more recently as grandma Ida in
"Malcolm in the middle" or "Dancing with the stars".
Bea Arthur. 85 year old Bea Arthur is known by different TV generations
already. Older peeps know her from the 70's series "Maude" a spin-off of
"All In The Family" in which she was first introduced as Edith Bunker's
cousin. In the eighties she starred in a new TV hit "The Golden Girls"
as Dorothy Zbornak, the statuesque daughter of petite Sophia Petrillo.
At 5'11" in her prime, with dark eyebrows, a permanent frown and a
deep voice Bea was a formidable force in every role she took on.
86 year old Betty White will probably be most loved as the
dimwitted Rose Nylund of 'The Golden Girls". But she has been on
TV since the dark ages starring in shows like "Mary Tyler Moore",
"The Carol Burnett Show" and countless guest appearances on
as many other TV regulars and talk shows.
Anybody got other examples of stars who've been in the media in their
golden years, but already had fame generations ago? I'm not talking
about icons like the Elizabeth Taylors, Robert Redfords, Chers etc.
But people who may never have reached iconic status, but who HAVE
more or less always been around?
