    Default Jake Gyllenhaal, Gwyneth Paltrow

People love to hate on Gwyneth and a big issue seems to be that she had family connections in showbiz and an unfair advantage in life.

It just occurred to me that no one points out that Jake and Maggie G. had a HUGE advantage -- their mother, Naomi Foner, who is a screenwriter who won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar. A friend of mine worked for Naomi as a researcher back in the day and said that she was a hateful tyrant and a user. My friend often babysat Jake and for a long time I thought she was just the babysitter. Later I found out that she was the researcher but Naomi took advantage of her and got her to do all these personal things. I also find it hilarious that now that the kids are famous the mom calls herself Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal. Because God forbid she wouldn't get treated like a famous person herself.

I'm just musing on these things. I'm not a big hater of the family. I think Maggie is really talented and "Secretary" is one of my favorite movies. I'm more like "eh" on Jake. A lot of hype and interest in his abs, but did anyone see "Jarhead." However, I definitely am not screaming that he doesn't deserve anything because his mom made it too easy for him. It would be foolish of him not to use any advantage he had.

Yeah, I never understand people's resentment about actors that may have had an advantage getting started. So what? Like most of us wouldn't use family connections if we had them? I sure would. Besides, we decide to keep these people around... we go see their movies, so they must be doing something right.

Maggie was great in Secretary, and Jake is likeable enough, IMO.

I'm not sure why people started disliking Gwyneth so much. I know she says dumb shit lately, but has she always done that? Have people always said that she had an unfair advantage?

I remember when Gwyneth won the Oscar, people were commenting back then on her unfair advantage. I've met Gwyneth a few times and she's so nice and warm in person. I can't understand why her interviews turn out so terribly! Maybe a demon takes over whenever a reporter is around.

BTW I use any unfair advantage I can get! Probably if I were Naomi Foner I'd be equally shameless and start using Gyllenhaal. LOL. I mean, it must be a lot easier to get a restaurant reservation. I wish I had more unfair advantages though! I suppose that's what upsets people --they feel they don't have an edge, therefore no one should

I have to elaborate that I think Gwyneth is not worth the
hype she's been given; that's where the resentment comes in
(if resentment isn't too strong a word).

I understand that her mother is Blythe Danner, an actress
whose work I've largely forgotten. I know her Dad was a
    hack director. But they're vastly overrating her anyway;
the family connections are just another reason to denigrate her
    accomplishments.

I haven't seen Secretary, but I saw Donnie Darko and I think
Jake Gyllenhaal might be a find. The movie was self-indulgently obscure
and ultimately pointless but Gyllenhaal did a very good job.
I particularly liked his scene in the psychiatrist's office when
    he was talking about God and he just wanted some "proof";
you could see he was suffering, and he thought he was going
crazy (with those visions of the guy in the demonic bunny suit),
and he just needed a sign from above that it was all
worth it. That was inspiring work; it contained some insight
into our own doubts, some of which last much longer than our
    teenaged years...

A friend of mine worked for Naomi as a researcher back in the day and
said that she was a hateful tyrant and a user. My friend often

of her and got her to do all these personal things. I also find it hilarious
that now that the kids are famous the mom calls herself Naomi Foner
Gyllenhaal. Because God forbid she wouldn't get treated like a famous
    person herself.
I remember Naomi Foner because she got a lot of credit for
writing one of River Phoenix's movies, Running on Empty (1988).
It was thought by some that she was a gifted writer.
But I'm surprised I've heard of her at all; screenwriters don't
    have household names.

Screenwriters do research? That's a switch.

I don't know what she's like as a person obviously (lennonfan thanks for shedding some light on her when you met her) maybe she just comes across in a certain way that people resent, and that's why she sounds so stupid in interviews lately, but at the same time I remember when she was hailed as this golden girl, a gifted actress, an impeccable person, and I felt that hollywood was just fawning over her, so it seems to have been both extremes for her. That must be hard to live with, the industry running hot and cold, but as she has had parents in the industry I imagine she's fully aware of it.

I dislike her and her advantages because she just seems so unaware. I remember when she had a cover of Vogue in the 90's, and she described how she got into college; she had terrible grades because she partied soo hard, so her dad called his friend Michael Douglas, who spoke to the pres of UCLA to get her in...and then she dropped otu after a year and immediately started doing commercials.

I was just like, Bitch, that is soo fucking tacky. you had "daddy call his movie friend" to get you into school? boo hiss. suck it up if you can't get into UCLA>..I don't know, that statement just annoyed me. It was as if she had to pay no dues whatsoever to get ahead.
