Default Can you PLEASE explain Conan O'Brien???

I dont live in the US but have visited 90% of it and travelled extensively throughout it and 2 things I just do not get and that is

1. WHAT IS THE ATTRACTION WITH CONAN O'BRIEN
&
2. WHY IS HE SO POPULAR???

As a country you all seem to have a fun, witty and cracking sense of humor whilst offering some of the worlds finest comedy programs.

I have tried on many occassions to watch his show but have to admit to him annoying me immensly and here is a list as to WHY.

1. He is FAR from Funny

2. He constantly talks over his guests

3. He cracks lame attempts at jokes than laughs at them himself (The studio audience sounds like thay are paid to laugh at his weak NON jokes)

4. Never listens to his guests

5. Is like the geek in your class that scratches his arse whils shouting over everyone

6. He looks like a real life version of Bart Simpson (I cant imagine anyone finding him remotely sexy or appealing)

7. He comes accross as SO desperate for attention

8. He always has 5th rate guests

9. He has the same ole tired and repetitive late night chat show formula of David Letterman and Jay Leno (You know the city skyline in the background, the desk, the ugly sofas, the outbac pub band playing, jokes before interviews etc, etc, etc)

10. He is enormously irritating.

So, if you could please explain his appeal, I would so appreciate it.

I think Conan's an acquired thing, and some of his jokes/skits are long-running bits that a casual viewer might not be wise to.

I think he's funny and he listens better to his guests than a lot of other shows. I love conan. I think his show was actually funnier during the writers strike.

I like him, his is the only night time talk show I'll watch because I know I wont be shit-bored. Not funny? Try watching Jay Leno... that's what I call not funny.

i used to watch conan and started noticing what you just listed more and more until i could no longer tolerate it. i think the main thing is that there is no t really that many funny shows on at that time, so he kind of wins by default. i can think of a dozen shows i'd rather watch than conan, had they been showing at the same time as conan.

ITA.

Not to be rude, but if you didn't like him him the first time, why keep watching?
Either you like someone or not,and what you'd find grossly unfunny or unattractive, might be someone else's cup of tea.Just sayin'

Don't worry, I'm from the US and I hardly ever found him
even a little amusing, either. The only times he made me
laugh were unintentional, on his part. You do watch a
person more than once, to see if it was just by chance
that you weren't amused. But after a while you stop.
You're never going to get that time back.

He's self-deprecating in a genuine way. He does bits that are just absurd to the point of laughter. He looks funny with his tall lanky frame, his huge head, his freckles and impossible bouffanty hair.

My favorites are his hilarious field trips with Mr. T. (apple-picking in upstate NY with a mohawked, muscled, gold-chained, tough-talking 80's TV character--it doesn't get more absurd than that.)

Pimp bot. A robot who dresses and acts like a pimp. The mere idea alone has me rolling for days.

The Walker Texas Ranger lever. I love how he glorifies and ridicules such hideously bad acting on laughably bad tv shows that actually took themselves seriously at one point.

Actually, all the stupid shit they had to do for the unscripted shows during the writers' strike. I kicked myself for not watching those strike shows when I saw a montage of all the retarded shit they resorted to. I've never laughed so hard. That Colbert/Stewart/Conan fight was hilarious!

I like Conan, I find him very witty on occasion. I can't find the Rant and Rave thread, so here goes:

Rant: The search function on GR is a myth, it doesn't work I've used it EVERY DAY since joining up, and it's only worked twice.
Rave: The second hottest guy in Vancouver dropped by his old office today, so I got to feast my eyes on him again. Also got his number, les roawl!

^^That's weird, I went right up to the search function, typed in "rant and rave" and it came up right away as the second result.

Here you go. Matter of fact, you were the last one to post in it on Feb. 5.

Ok, pimpbot was funny. But then there is a lot of stuff that is not funny and just too juvenile for words, like masturbating bear.

Or at least that used to be the case. It's been about a decade since I watched the show; I suppose Conan and his writers may have grown up and become more sophisticated since then.
