Okay, here's the idea.
Most of us agree that these days, so called "stars" are usually
only known for being in the tabloids and not for having had an
actual job/function in the entertainment world BEFORE they
"made it big" in the gossip headlines.
Also, most of us agree that these days, the entire term "star"
is used for just about anybody who - for whatever reason -
gets mentioned in the (tabloid) media. Everybody seems to
start out as an immediate star, not as a "promising newcomer"
or "fresh-faced talent".
So, I thought it might be fun to explore vintage "gossip", of the
olden days, like the Golden Hollywood era and see if and how
things have changed and what made the headlines back then.
The many marriages of Elizabeth Taylor (who was considered
to be an actress before becoming a star and later tabloid
headline material), the Ingrid Bergman/Rossellini scandal,
Charlie Chaplin, etc. etc. etc.
Happy digging!
Quote:
Elizabeth Taylor "steals" Eddie Fisher from Debbie Reynolds!
The parties involved: actress Elizabeth Taylor, actress/singer
Debbie Reynolds, singer Eddie Fisher.
The background: Fisher was a hit-singer/crooner in the fifties.
He was married to actress Debbie Reynolds ("Singing In The Rain"
etc.) with whom he had 2 children at the time, 1 of which is
actress Carry Fisher.
Reynolds had grown up in the same studio system as Elizabeth
Taylor, in fact as teenagers, Reynolds and Taylor went to school
together on the Metro Goldwyn Mayer lot. You could call them
friends. Reynolds served as matron of honor for Taylor's wedding
to Mike Todd, a good friend of Eddie Fisher's (and the circle is almost
completed with Reynolds and Fisher naming their son "Todd" Fisher,
after daddy's best friend).
So, Taylor married Todd and had a daughter with him, but he
was killed in 1958 on his private airplane named for his wife,
"The Lucky Liz,". Family friends Fisher and Reynolds immediately
rushed to Taylor's side to comfort her. Reynolds took Taylor's
children in to protect them from the media. Fisher stayed to
comfort Taylor. One thing lead to another and Taylor and Fisher
became an item, Fisher eventually left his family for Taylor.
In the end, Taylor's marriage to Fisher only lasted 2 years. She
then fell madly in love with Richard Burton, with whom she tied
the knot TWICE, unsuccessfully.......
