Default Tom Cruise -- Why the Charade? Warning -- long post!

With all this bizarro news about Katie and Tom over the past year -- and it keeps getting weirder and weirder -- I keep asking myself "why"? I simply don't get why he's going to all this trouble if it really is a big ruse. I understand that he is deeply insecure, but doesn't he have any idea how absolutely crazy everyone thinks he is? Doesn't he know that so many people have so many doubts about his relationship with Katie and the impending birth of his child? Does he not know that people are questioning whether she is really pregnant?

I don't know why I care -- maybe it's because I can't fathom how anyone would go to this much trouble. With the stuff that's been said about his adopted children, I can't imagine him having a surrogate child with Katie -- I would think he'd want his own child. I know that you can look bigger and smaller when you are pregnant based on what you wear, but Katie's belly has appeared nothing but bizarre -- again I ask why and why would she go along with this? Can there be any amount of money in the world that would be worth it?

I just don't get it, I know he's nuts, but this is beyond nuts -- it's certifiable.
Is he so arrogant and self-absorbed that he doesn't understand that the more he shoves this down our throats the more we want to vomit? Does he really believe he is fooling anyone. Scariest thought yet -- what if this is genuine and not a calculated PR mess -- why, why, why?

Whether you look at is as a completely calculated ruse or only partially fabricated (maybe she wore a prosthetic belly on and off to disguise the due date) it begs the question why.

Beyond "he's crazy" what are your thoughts why he has gone to all this trouble and why Katie is playing along.

Sorry this is so long!

I think it's all linked with Scientology and its requirement that senior members behave in a certain way. Tom's sexuality has been under scrutiny for years, and many people think he's gay. Co$ strongly disapproves of homosexuality, or believes it can be 'cured' with vitamins and brainwashing, errr sorry, 'therapy' so if Tom wants to progress to the highest level within the cult, errrrrrr sorry 'church' then he must be seen to be living like a happy hetero with a wife and baby to prove it (see John Travolta and Kelly Preston). Katie was carefully selected to fulfill the role of 'wife' and was probably paid handsomely too. Unfortunately, she does not have the mental resiliance to avoid getting sucked into the Scientology madness so now she's a lost cause. The 'pregnancy' is fake, although they WILL produce a baby from a Scientology surrogate.

^I agree with both of you> the question of why that us mere mortals can't wrap our brain around, and the possible answer A*O gave.
However, A*O, do you think he's also trying to pull one on Scientology itself? I.e.> is he going through this scam BECAUSE he cannot for whatever reason (be it physically or because of his sexual orientation) biologically father a child? Is he reaching the peak of his madness because he fears he's failing his much praised "religion"?

I think those that think the pregnancy is fake are just as nutter as Tom
In a way, I hope I'm wrong because it is just all so freaking bizarre! I love science fiction.

No - I think Scientology is all part of the conspiracy (HA! the C word) because he is their poster boy and sinks MILLIONS into their bank accounts. If they kick him out they lose their biggest draw card, although his recent behaviour will hopefully have scared more potential recruits away than lured them in.

Have you ever seen the show on A&E called "Intervention"? Katie's parents need to send their story and have an intervention on her. Yeah, I know she's an adult and everything, but I seriously think she is brainwashed and it just Tom's smiling little robot now.

I guess I am happy that I don't understand any of this -- it would make me a crazy as them!

Do you think anyone is a big fan of his anymore (or will admit to it in public)?

The whole idea of this cult having such a hold on its members is unbelievable. But, I can totally see someone like Tom getting involved -- father issues, self-confidence issues, eager to please, desperate for public validation, etc.

Wouldn't be interesting to hear what a "regular" Scientologist has to say about Tom and Katie?

I was going to say "normal" and thought that there weren't any of those! I meant just regular joe Scientologists, not a celeb.

My former dentist quit his practice, left his wife and became a Scientologist years ago.

I think he has an idea, but he's too crazy to do anything about it. He can't keep his mouth shut, and he won't debate people in a rational, logical way. The words "low key" are not in his vocab. He just keeps getting more wigged out as the years pass. Remember when he was normal? Like in the 80s?

He was probably normal in the 80's because he was taking whatever meds kept him on an even keel. As far as caring what we silly mortals think of his antics, yeah I imagine he suspects most people think he's nuts, but I'm sure he dismisses us as being "glib" or "misguided".

While we were gabbing, a Scientology ward
took Katie into isolation:

Hail Xenu! Er, wait...
