Formerly Seedy Hollywood Corner To Get Facelift
(Hollywood, CA) -- The legendary intersection of Hollywood and Vine will soon undergo a massive rejuvenation. The area has fallen into disrepair over the last several years but will soon be home to a new W Hotel, condominiums, apartments and luxury shops and restaurants. Los Angeles officials have cleared the way for a 400-million-dollar retail-residential project and authorized the developer to seize buildings housing about 30 small businesses through eminent domain. The "Los Angeles Times" reports the action was loudly protested by homeowners and local merchants as heavy-handed and unfriendly who said it was wrong to use public money to benefit a private developer. Hollywood is in the midst of a major renovation with dozens of trendy nightclubs, restaurants and massive new shopping centers such as the Hollywood and Highland Center, where the Academy Awards will take place Sunday. Critics also say many historic old Hollywood buildings will be torn down as a result of the action.
