Because she started out wanting to be a manufactured pop star called Lizzy Grant but she changed her name, had a makeover and become an indie darling and she's polarised the alternative music community. I personally love her voice on her recordings, but the 2 live TV performances I've seen sucked and sucked harder.
ETA: Oh, and denies any plastic surgery despite being unable to close her duck lips.

Don't have much of an opinion on her and I haven't heard her live but her recorded songs are brilliant. I'll buy her album and I rarely buy albums.

So she changed her packaging to something more marketable? I get how that's worthy of a little ridicule but I don't see the big deal, everyone does it. I mean, do we really believe Gaga always dressed that way? Or that Britney was a virgin? The ps denial is completely stupid and always rubs me the wrong way. Meh, then I guess I'm just a cynic, I don't expect much of anything in entertainment to be "real" anymore. Or it just doesn't surprise me to find out a lot of it is manufactured.
