Married folks-how did you get engaged?
I think it's interesting to see the creative ways that people get engaged. Some men get such funny ideas. My husband proposed on Valentine's Day, and I totally did not expect it (even though we had a 2 year old and had lived togeter 3 years, it was not a big pressing issue at that point).
He ordered a pizza, and put the ring on the little plastic table thing that they put on pizzas to keep the box lid from touching the pizza. He was so non-chalant as I opened the box, starving. I saw that ring in the middle and just about died, and melted into his arms. Of course he made some silly comments like "what in the world is that" and "why did they put that with our pizza".
I have kept the receipt for the pizza and the little plastic table thing all this time, and smile whenever I see it.

Re: Married folks-how did you get engaged?
What a stupid thread idea.
Ok.....it's not. It's cute and so is your story Algernon. I'm just a bitter girlfriend who will probably always just be a girlfriend. I don't want to rush things but my I just don't see my boyfriend as the type of guy to do something cute and clever. I think my story is going to go more like brits. (no offense brit, it doesn't speak to how much your boyfriend/husband loves you, it speaks more to your mans personality)

Re: Married folks-how did you get engaged?
My husband is just the marrying type; he's ready to get married on the second date practically. I wasn't in so much of a rush so I told him that I would tell him when I was ready and not to try proposing as a surprise. I figured if he asked before I was ready, then we'd have to break up and blah blah blah. After we were seeing each other 3 years I told him "Okay, I'm ready to look at diamonds." And then we did look at loose diamonds and I designed my own ring and when it was ready we got it and I put it on my finger. Ha! So there was no proposal. What can I say? Our weird behavior works for us!

Re: Married folks-how did you get engaged?
Well, my husband and I were living together at the time and he came home late from work one night with a brand new 36 inch tv!! As I was helping him haul this monstrosity up the stairs to our apartment I was thinking there'd damned well better be a diamond in his pocket.
Later that evening we were sitting on the balcony and he pulled this little velvet box out of his pocket. He didn't even get to ask. I saw the box and yelled 'NO WAY!', snatched it and jammed that ring on my finger as fast as I could. He still laughs about how I didn't give him a chance to even ask.

Re: Married folks-how did you get engaged?
Well, the way my hubby and I got engaged is romantic to us, but probably not to anybody else.
We'd known one another about six months and we were sitting at his house one evening listening to some great jazz and drinking wine and I realized that I was probably never going to meet anyone else I loved and got along with as much as him so I asked him to marry me! He agreed, and said he was going to ask me but was afraid I would say no because I'd often told him I would never, ever get married.
We went ring shopping that weekend, I moved in with him about six weeks later, and we were married the same year.
A lot of my friends have told me they asked their husbands, too. And I thought I was the only one! Apparently it's quite common.

Re: Married folks-how did you get engaged?
I am not a romantic at heart, so I think this is all bullshit. Maybe your man was romantic proposing, but is he STILL romantic? I think that matters more than anything.

Re: Married folks-how did you get engaged?
My husband is as romantic as a toilet brush which is just as well because I can't stand what my daughter calls the 'wooshy gooshy' stuff. If he did anything like that I'd probably die of embarrassment. We got engaged when we were walking along the street past a VERY nice jewellers and he just said "Well, I suppose we'd better go in here and buy a ring - what do you reckon?" I chose it, he bought it - been the story of our lives ever since LOL.

Re: Married folks-how did you get engaged?
The getting the ring part was anti-climactic but the finding out we were going to continue the relationship was kinda odd. Peter (my husband) was living in Rhode Island and I was living in SC when we first started dating. We had known one another in another life and had reconnected after about two years. At the time, I could fly free so I decided to fly up to RI to visit him. I flew standby from point A to point B, got bumped from B to C, got on the next flight out, and barely made it on the plane from C to D. While I was visiting just as a friend, it turned into a very hot weekend and I was totally smitten. What started out as a three day visit turned into five days. On the fourth day, as we were on the ocean walk (as seen in the movie Great Gatsby) in Newport, waves crashing, wind blowing, mansions in the background, sailboats in the distance, I asked him if he thought he could ever marry me because I was never going to work that hard to get up there again. He quit his job up there a month later and moved back to SC and we were engaged a year later. The ring itself is a sweet story and it's my dearest posession. We'll be married 17 years this Jan. Most days I want to kill him, though.

Re: Married folks-how did you get engaged?
We had been dating for years...didn't live together as he lived 2 hrs away. But we would see each other every weekend and take trips, etc.
So we decided to take a trip to the beach (Virginia Beach) and we were walking on the beach at sunset and he just grabbed my hand and proposed. He had purchased the ring like 6 months prior and I had no idea.....though I did have a feeling he would ask me on this trip...and he did! Not super romantic, but very sweet.

Re: Married folks-how did you get engaged?
Neither of us really believed in marriage but then, at some point, I just asked him for some reason, he said yes and a few weeks later we were married at city hall. Right after the 26-year-old Phillipino mail order bride and her 60+ groom. Fabulous. No one knew and I went back to work the next day like nothing even happened. And no, he is not romantic anymore (he, in fact, just farted) but most of the time he's ok, if a huge pain in the ass.
