You really should just go to Austin, and firebomb the rest of the state.

San Antonio: Obviously The Alamo is the most go-to place... like SB said it's a pretty self-guided tour. Don't get roped into buying all the souvenirs, though, because they'll try to sell you anything and everything Alamo-related within a 5 block radius. The Wax Museum/Ripley's Believe It Or Not in SA is really cool.. touristy, but a neat experience, and it's right around downtown near the Alamo. Natural Bridge Caverns is a kind of touristy thing to do but it's also really beautiful..

Here's a link to some Riverwalk attractions.. and some user-submitted reviews of attractions in the area.

I would definitely do Natural Bridge. I've gone there several times. It's pretty cool.

Natural Bridge is very cool. I've done it three or four times, but the last time was about 3 years ago.

Just try to avoid dates or times when it would be likely that there will be elementary school or day care groups. You might even want to call ahead and ask about that if you choose to go there. Being packed into a cave with 20 bratty, whining, disruptive kids is my idea of hell.

Yes, puh-leeze don't waste your time anywhere else but Austin (but no firebombs 'cause I gots friends in 'dem hellish places). If you make it to A-Town, check out: South Congress Avenue (sometimes called SoCo, which is pretentious as hell but it's fun); Casino el Camino (best burger you'll ever have in your life); Blanton Museum; LBJ Library and Museum; Texas Memorial Museum; Bob Bullock History Center; the Drag and UT Campus; 6th Street (if you like nightly bars and clubs); Alamo Drafthouse (maybe only place on planet you can get dinner, beer and a movie at the same time except your living room--started in Austin by Tim and Carrie League--now franchises all across Texas); Zilker Park; the Oasis on Lake Travis; Hula Hut; Chuy's Tex Mex (North Austin location for least amount of wait); Maudie's Tex Mex (North Austin for same reason); Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center; Zilker Gardens; gosh, I'm sure this is boring you but Austin is way "purdier" than any other city in this great state!

Houston is very fun. We have a great museum district, if he's into that sort of thing. The Museum of Natural Science is one of my favorites, as is the Medical museum. The Galleria is something he should check out, but it's very touristy. I prefer to do my shopping in smaller malls, unless I absolutely need something at one of the designer stores.

We have GREAT restaurants... really, the best I've ever experienced. Tell him to try Mark's on Westheimer. It's incredible.

There is an area called Montrose which is predominately gay, but more and more people are starting to go there to take advantage of the wide variety of really cool boutiques, bars, and cafes. Nightlife is really fun in Houston.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a big part of the culture here. March is "rodeo season". As a non-Texan, it might be interesting for him, but it could also be one of those things he'd hate.

He should experience eating Houston barbecue and Tex Mex.

NASA is very cool. You can tour the facility, walk through and explore a space shuttle, buy astronaut food, experience "blast off" (basically they put you in a room where it counts down to blast off and then it gets really loud and the whole room shakes as if a space shuttle were taking off, and smoke comes out of the walls), do simulations of landing a space shuttle or doing a mission. It's fun. It's located near the Kemah boardwalk, which is also wonderful and a great place to go relax and enjoy some seafood and old school carnival rides.

Galveston is a fun destination for a weekend trip. I enjoy going to Moody Gardens. Their rainforest pyramid is my favorite. Again, it's touristy but very cool.

What area is he planning to live in? Do you know?

Yep, I am so spoiled that I simply can't watch a movie anywhere else. And their pizza is the best in town. Weird freaking movies, too!!

Alamo Drafthouse is a riot... if you can, go on a Master Pancake night. They have live commentary as the movie is playing poking fun at it.. they've done 'Titanic' and 'The Matrix'.. great fun.

Zilker Park is awesome, too. Town (Ladybird) Lake is really pretty.. on weekends they have a makeshift market down on The Drag, right in front of campus.. people selling self-made jewelry and soaps/lotions/etc... sometimes they have musicians out there playing for money, too. Austin really is a great town to visit.. you can live here and find something new to do all the time.

Does Dallas have good nightlife? I'm more into the chill lounge scene as I've gotten older. I've always heard Houston is more of a party town than Dallas FWIW.

And believe me when I say I've NEVER had a bad meal in Houston. NEVER. That is one city that knows how to eat.
