For major US holidays, if you must travel them, give yourself at LEAST 3 months lead time...more if you're able.

Although there are deals to be had occasionally for the actual holiday, on the majors like Christmas and Thanksgiving. Most people travel the days prior to those.

^^I just tried it and it was the same price both times for that particular flight?

I've heard flying on a Tuesday is also the cheapest, maybe that ties in with the buying flights on a Tuesday too? The sweet spot for flights is apparently 3-4 months before.

I just read Wednesday is the cheapest. Guess you just have to be flexible with fly times. I've been looking for a cheap flight to Genoa, Italy from NYC via Gatwick. I can go whenever but would like to go soon. I know we're going into the high season but damn, prices have really jumped since I last flew to Europe a few years ago.

I miss the days when you could get a super cheapo flight as a courier. And when Cheap Tickets really did have cheap tickets for last minute flights.

^^Yes, prices have gone up a lot. Probably initially due to increased fuel costs, but now the status quo even with fuel prices coming down.

When I used to fly a lot for work, would check sites like Expedia and then go directly through the airlines to book; if the price differential was large, would call the customer service line of ones where I was a FF and ask if they could offer same price as the discount sites. Sometimes they could!

All of these things work some of the time, you just needs to use the scatter approach (use all of them).

Oh & when I go to Prague, we always book the hotel directly on their own website.
