I've seen the shorts in Edmonton at -14. Not on me though.
As Canadian as possible under the circumstances

Yeah, the venerable canadian combination of shorts and a hoodie. For when it's too cold for a t-shirt, but too hot for pants.

I think Lenny means Portland Maine, and not Portland Oregon......right, Lenny?

The NY main highway from Montreal would be the northway/thruway- it's a toll road. The Mass pike is as well. There are alternate routes, but they would be less direct.

    Yes, I mean Portland, Maine^^
I decided not to rent a car from here because I'm afraid the weather might be too bad to drive after all you've said. I will wait until I'm in New York and decide what to do then depending on the weather...yes, I'm a chicken. I hate driving on slippery streets and am afraid of snow storms.
Flying is not an option because it would be too expensive.
If the weather is too bad for driving I will stay in New York the whole time and come back in spring to do the other stuff. So thank you for all the advice!

    Where are you from, Lenny?

I live in the greater Boston area. The weather can do all kinds of unpredictable shit here, so yeah, don't be getting a car while you're here.

Boston is neighborhood-y and compact. It is a great city to explore on foot, and has OK public transit (better than some US cities, but not great European standards). Still, you can get most places by subway, commuter train, or bus.

If you really want to go to Portland Maine, you can take the Amtrak train (you can also travel from NY to US that way).

For hotel chains, Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn, and Quality Inn are usually fine. Marriott is good.

If you're going to Montreal, skip up to Quebec City for the day - old Europe in Canada.
