Weird--I was just thinking how much I would need to vacation 2 weeks in UK during the offseason. I've got a little over 3,000 saved just for this purpose but it doesn't seem like enough still.

Tati, you said you backpacked & stayed in hostels, but were you alone? I wouldn't be opposed to a hostel/b&b but would be worried about security. I've heard that many nowadays have places to lock up your luggage while you're out, though?

No, I was with my husband (and the first time around, same thing, but he was my boyfriend then ). One of the hostels we stayed at back in 2002 had separate dorm rooms for men and women, all the others actually had private rooms, with a bathroom either ensuite or just down the hall, so they were about as secure and private as a hotel room. We didn't have any luggage to leave behind during the days though - we only had a pack each and took them with us everywhere we went.

$3000 for two weeks can get you a long way - our flights were under $700 per person, round trip. This time we stayed in a rented cottage and our friends treated us to that, so I honestly don't know the cost. We did spend two nights in a hotel, and it ran about 75 pounds per night ($150 CAD, includes breakfast). And you definitely don't need to pay that much - the hostels are excellent and range from 10-20 pounds per person per night, B&Bs can be had for 25-30 pounds. Campsites are a few pounds. Everything is extremely nice and sparkling clean.
