Seriously? That is the last thing I want on a holiday, lying on a beach choking on fumes.

I'd still say Belize. Only the cities are really dangerous in central America, as a tourist out on a resort you are perfectly safe. And Belize is safer than the rest.
if you want off the beaten path there's Nicaragua too - it's like the new Costa Rica for people who think Costa Rica is too touristy.

Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua would be my recommendation, too.

To get to St. Martin, you usually have to fly in from Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico allows you to switch from a much larger plane to one that is small enough to land on St. Martin. If I remember correctly, St. Martin's airport is Princess Julianna Airport, and it's on the Dutch side. From my recollection, the Dutch side is busier, more industrial, and somewhat less scenic. It does have Cupecoy Beach, though, which is awesome because the beach is isolated and surrounded by rock walls.

To get to St. Bart's, you need to fly in from St. Martin, and on an even smaller plane (like a 12 to 20 seater). I've never been on St. Bart's but it is the celeb/jetset hangout, but ironically is more rustic (less amenities in public areas and on the beach). I'd love to hit that place someday.

Another vote for Belize. My husband and I went a few years ago and I absolutely love it.

i don't know about guatemala. it's gorgeous but there's less 'caribbean' and it sounds like that's what you want for this holiday. the atlantic coast is very small and there aren't a lot of beaches in the classic sense. you could go to rio dulce which is this jungle paradise at the mouth of a river that's full of mangroves and birds and wildlife and these incredible eco-lodges but there's not much in way of sandy beaches. and the rest of that area is more rain forest/lakes type thing. so if what you want is a combination of rain forest and sandy beaches, then i think belize and nicaragua would be the way to go in central america. and if you go to the south of belize you can always take a boat to rio dulce in guatemala and spend a day or two there.

Well I've scoured message boards and have done a ton of research. I thought about Guadeloupe but admit go being intimidated by the language barrier. Now I think we have it narrowed down between St. Barts and Anguilla.

    Thank you Miss Effie.

Uh, winner winner chicken dinner!!! Found this place in St. Barts. I think we're going to split our stay and do 4 days in St. Barts and 4 days in Anguilla.
