    Default I need vacation ideas

I want to take my kids on vacation this May to someplace tropical. I've been to Cancun, Cabo, and Hawaii, so I'd like to try something different. I'm a single mom and just my 3 kids (9, 10, 15)and I will be travelling. I've looked into the Beaches Turks & Caicos resort, but I read too many bad reviews, so that's out of the question. I'm also looking into the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas as well, but it sounds like a tourist trap and I don't know if I can get more for my money somewhere else. This is the first vacation I will take without another adult, so safety is important, of course.

I figure with all you world travelers out there, you'd be able to give me some suggestions. Any good, bad reviews? Any and all help would be appreciated! Thanks!

    costa rica

northeastern guatemala and belize - you get sandy beaches, and mayan ruins and old colonial architecture.

    dominican republic

    guadeloupe and/or martinique

    aruba

That is where i want to vacation next year, looks like paradise, and looks expensive. Is the aquarium as nice as sea world?

i haven't been to sea world since i was in elementary school which was about 20 years ago (that was really hard to write...) so i don't remember but it was almost beyond words.

i have friends who go to atlantis every year and love it.

I was going to say Atlantis too....but have heard its very expensive and HUGE, and not in a good way. Like almost too big.

I think Sputnik had some good ideas.

Even Key West or southern Florida is nice.....Bermuda?

I know it sounds a bit tacky but for something a bit different how about a Caribbean cruise? Many companies offer 'family specials' and cater for kids with their own activities while you sip a pina colada by the pool. You get to see different places too. Bermuda is nice. I found it very relaxing there and they have some very nice beaches which are very quite and not crowded at all. Plus there's some great shops in Hamilton. I'm not so sure if it a great place to go with young kids, though. They might get bored.

I would definitely look into Atlantis though. There's a ton to do for both you and your kids and i guarantee you'll never get bored!

I stayed at the Atlantis twice. I wouldnt recommend it for young children. Its more of a party atmosphere, With the casino in the hotel and many bars there is alot of drinking, gambling, scantily clad woman. You will see families there but I personally wouldnt take my kids there.
Bermuda is a perfect choice for families. Also Grand Cayman.
Classier people and friendly and clean, plenty for kids to do.

never been to atlantis but it looks like the mega-mall of resorts. but then i don't like resorts at all so i guess it depends on what you want out of a holiday.

It is huge, and a bit far of a walk to the ocean. I prefer walking right out ogf my room on to the beach, not taking an elevator. The pool is to fdie for tho, and a very nice aquariumn you can walk through. When we were there we had to wear wrist bracelets though, to show you were staying there, and not just trying to use the facitlites. Very upscale shopping boutiques. I wouldnt go back/ First time was honeymoon, 2nd was with a group of friends. Have you thought about Belize? My aunt owns tattoo shops there and they bought a hotel which is where they live. Great diving/snorkeling and not too hustle bustle

I never considered Bermuda, but since so many of you have mentioned it, I'll definitely look into it.

I have considered a cruise too, but I went on one years ago and HATED it! I think I'll stick to land.

I'm really looking for a resort where I won't have to search for or travel on my own to activities or excursions. I have no sense of direction and I don't want to get freaked out in a foreign country.

I'm considering an all-inclusive, even though the food usually sucks. Sometimes it's just easier with kids to have it all right there when you need it. Anyone had any experience with Iberostar?

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Any more are welcome. I have a lot of research to do!

I was going to suggest Florida. I've spent quite a bit of time in the panhandle and the beaches are GORGEOUS. That's where you see that pure white sugar sand around Destin, Panama City, Pensacola, Fort Walton, etc. The southern part of FL is much more metropolitan by and large. With kids, I'd agree with Lynnie and hit Key West for laid back and Orlando if you're wanting to do Disney or something.

I've been on cruises to the Bahamas twice - the second time just to make sure I hated it as much as I thought I did. Affirmative. Cruises aren't my thing. I know you're not supposed to get sea sick on boats that big, but I did. It was 5 days of misery each time. I know - I'm an idiot for going again. The Bahamas themselves are beautiful and have the clearest water I've ever seen, though. If I ever go back, I'll fly.

I loved the Riu Playacar all-inclusive resort in Playa del Carmen, but it's so close to Cancun that it might be too similar for you.

The food was actually really good, and there are several options (buffet and several on-site restaurants)... swim up bar in the pool... they helped us coordinate activities such as swimming with the dolphins and tours of the area... private beach with on-site kayking... I really enjoyed it and am actually going back next year. I found the prices pretty reasonable, too.
