Whistler's PEAK 2 PEAK gondola opened this week amid enormous fanfare, having laid claim to the title of "the most daring ski lift ever built".
This isn't a ride for the faint of heart the lift links the two resorts of Whistler and Blackcomb, travelling as high as 1,500 feet above the ground.
PEAK 2 PEAK traverses 2.7 miles of cloud-shrouded fir trees in just 11 minutes.
The windows are made from glass rather than perspex to make photography easier. The gondola will run during the summer, offering access to some 40 miles of hiking trails
As a feat of mountain engineering, construction of the PEAK 2 PEAK has rewritten the record book. Its the highest, longest, heaviest of its kind in the world and can operate safely in winds of up to 50mph.
Each of the two terminal stations supports the equivalent force of two Boeing 747s in flight. Each spool of cable 28 miles in total weighs 90 tons.
But PEAK 2 PEAK isn't all about technological posturing it will also improve the experience for thousands of skiers and snowboarders
Instead of choosing between the contrasting terrain of either Whistler or Blackcomb as your playground for the day, you can now swap at will without a tedious journey.
The two mountains are joined at the base, but until now skiers and riders have had to descend all the way to the valley to switch from one to the other
The price of the project comes in at a cool £29 million.
Though it will be the showcase for the next Winter Olympics in 2010.
After ten years of continuous construction, Whistler and Blackcomb have evolved from two villages into what amounts to a ski city that sprawls down the valley.
