Chalet - I'm so used to seeing the drinks bill being more than the food bill, not just with work colleagues but friends too.

This is where the great Aussie BYO (Bring Your Own) booze thing in restaurants is such a great idea.

We have a Mexican restaurant near us that you can bring your own beer/wine. I love it and our bill is so much cheaper.

Is that not a universal thing? Because licensed restaurants are the exception not the rule in my neck of the woods (lots of Thai, Indian, Mexican etc) or they're licensed and BYO.

I don't know of any restaurants around here that allow it. Can't think of a single one I've ever seen, ever, anywhere, now that I think about it. Didn't know these places existed.

Since my husband and I found out that our local sushi joint AND the high-priced steak and crab house nearby have free corkage, we have actually been eating more at both places. We let them know it, too. They are actually making more money due to these smart policies. Yet neither one exactly advertised it, so it's always a good idea to ask! Even if it is ten bucks, that is still one glass of wine or one drink at many places, so it's worth it to bring a bottle.

I dunno how many of you frequent Ruth's Chris steakhouses (very pricey, only birthdays and such for us) but they have free corkage too.

I'm the same as Lobes, don't think I've ever seen a place where you can bring your own booze.

There aren't any around here (Detroit area, Michigan in general) that do this, although I'm willing to think I just don't know about any of them.

They do exist! I have seen several. So if you got wine as a gift, call ahead and ask. You might be surprised.

yeah, we have the Crawfish Shack near my house... they don't serve alcohol, so you can literally see the locals dragging their coolers inside...

i'd definitely bring my own if there was free corkage but it is usually pretty pricy - $15 ish - near me.

i prefer splitting checks because i don't want someone else to feel the burden of what i've chosen to eat or give me the side-eye when i want another glass of wine. i'll happily pay for every bit of what i've ordered.

Corkage is usually 50c or a buck per person, and they only charge the ones they have to provide glasses for (not that I've ever heard of someone smuggling in plastic cups to save a dollar). But a lot of BYO-only places don't charge corkage at all.

Below is an interesting article on the topic. According to the author, corkage across the US averages $25. And usually comes with a two bottle limit.
