No way! They charge enough without gouging us for tips. The only people we tip are in restaurants (10% if the service was good, otherwise round it up) bars and cafés, and taxis but only in a "keep the change" way and not if they were a shit driver, and it's just as likely they'll round it down rather than giving out change, so it evens out.

of course if you have a good relationship with your barber/barista/drug dealer you can feel free to tip them, but it's not the norm and it's certainly not expected.

I tip my hairdresser and colourist (10% overall) because they do such a great job but they certainly don't expect it and are very gracious about it. Same with taxi drivers if they actually know where to go and don't drive like maniacs and then I round up the fare a bit. I do NOT tip people who open doors, push lift buttons or show me how the hair dryer works in a hotel but I do say a very sincere thank you. Restaurants get a tip (10%) if the service and/or food is especially good but that's not difficult in this city. And again, it's not EXPECTED but gratefully received if it happens.

I think the point is that a tip is at the customer's discretion, not an obligation. Long may it last.

Should you tip web sites that give you cookies even if they're not edible?

Should you tip the person who chases you halfway through the cosmetics department offering you a complimentary spritz of Lilo de Toilette?

Good grief. I don't even HAVE a drug dealer. I feel certain that would cut into my hairdresser fund.

My mother insisted on giving EXACTLY 10% while we were away , to the extent that she was counting out pennies. I was embarrassed especially as a) her pension is more than I earn and b) I'm not tight when it comes to tipping in a country where the cost & standard of living is a lot less than at home.

I think having been to the US quite a bit (how can I ever say that without sounding like an arsehole? Still not mastered it) and seeing my Dad who is a very generous tipper, I always get a bit funny with my friends when we go out for dinner and they don't give AT LEAST 10%. 12.5% ideally. I mean, if it was terrible service of course don't give a tip; I'm not made of money. But if I spend £30 on a meal I don't really miss £3-5 on top of that. Having worked in a bar where we weren't allowed to keep our tips I think I'm a bit sensitive about it. Though of course we all kept them, one time I think I was allowed to keep the change of a £20 note on a £6 drinks order...that was a good shift.
