Oh man how could I be so thoughtless? My personal umbrella holder gets a few bucks from me too.

Well as a tourist in NYC I noticed it a lot. Maybe it's because the friends I stayed with all worked in restaurants and felt some sort of service industry solidarity but they tipped EVERYONE - baggage handlers, doormen, manicurists, hairdressers etc. It was constant.

Most of us just live in quiet little suburbs of America though. I have no doorman, manicurist, or baggage handler (aside from my awesome eye cream, but that's a topic for another thread).

I meant at the airport, and I guess tourists come into contact with a lot more people who require tipping as they eat out more, take more taxis and tours etc (don't forget to tip the guide!)

Yeah, I tip the baggage guy or driver of the rental car van $1/bag, sometimes more if I'm feeling perky.

Hairdresser/barber tips are the norm here. Is that not so in Australia?

My hairdresser is my personal lifeline. He gets a very nice tip and double at Christmas. One has to reward perfection.

I didn't start tipping my hairdresser regularly until she got a Romanian assistant who works two jobs.

Does anybody besides me tip the free-food-samples person at Costco? I'll throw a buck at them for a square of cheese with a toothpick through it. And $2 for a half-ounce shot of fruit juice.

NO! Why the hell should they get extra $$$ for handing out cheese cubes? Oh yes, I remember, shitty US minimum wages that employers rely on customers to subsidise with tips. That's the basic problem.

My friend works at Costco. They make a nice hourly wage. Plus, benefits.

We have a guard gate and I made a platter of cookies and gave them a gift cert for pizza delivery. Nothing fancy, but I don't work these days.
