I would rather pay a flat 10% incorporated into the price and not have to tip 20 times a day. That's what would get me, constantly putting my hand in my pocket every time someone serving me did their job. I know I know, that's how it works in the US and the minimum wage is so low, but I would never be able to leave the house or I'd go broke.

The only way you would have to tip 20 times a day is if you go into 20 restaurants a day. We don't tip store clerks!

But don't you tip doormen, taxi drivers, dry cleaners etc? Seems like on TV they're always tipping.

The tipping culture hasn't insinuated it's way into Oz yet but there are worrying signs that the rot is setting in, especially in tourist areas. Plea to all Americans! we'd love to see you down under but PLEASE, tipping is not required or expected so don't do it. I know it goes against all your instincts but it's not necessary, seriously, and if you do choose to reward exceptional service (the whole point of tipping) 10% MAX. The total amount on your restaurant bill is the amount you pay - nothing more, nothing less.

Lawd! Doormen?? We don't all live in New York City! Dry cleaners? Never. Most of us have cars and never take a taxi.

You tip your doorman, if your building has one, at Christmas. Otherwise, no.

I've never heard of tipping a dry cleaner.

I have a doorman. He's one of the boys from the flat upstairs who is perpetually chainsmoking outside the front door of the building. I don't tip him, he smells.

I will tip my footman, and my valet. But not my valet's assistant. I think that's my valet's responsibility.

I tip my chauffeur, my coiffeur, and my boozeur. And that's about it.
