We pay a standard 10% sales tax no matter where. It really is much easier.

I know state tax differs, but I've never heard of/experienced county taxes being different!

They're different by county here. Down here they are 7.5%, in Miami they are 7%.

County AND City. In Ohio we had different sales tax by city. And you paid income tax in the city you live and the city you work in. Big old pain in the butt. Come to Montana!!! We have no sales tax (except I think some tourist hotel tax) and just pay income tax to the state.

shit, i've put right around 32,000 on mine this year. And I do actually travel 100 miles to pick up my niece once a month...

So basically, I'm spoiled, and like Bee said, "I ain't driving 30 minutes for Cracker Barrel" lol
Exactly... if you live in a big enough town/city - everything you could possibly want is right there in your realm. Speaking of Cracker Barrell, everyone notice the backtracking they pulled with the Phil Robertson comments? They pulled the Duck Dynasty shit off their shelves for 24 hours before their customers weighed in and all that shit was right back out there!

That's crazy. And also it means that the consumer cannot make a balance decision especially if you don't know the tax rate.

if I visited I guess I 'd pay no tax then since I don't live in tx? No, thought not.

You just ask what the tax is. Either someone at the shop or the person you might be visiting.

It's annoying but there's so many different cities, counties, states in the U.S. and they ALL have to get their damn piece of the pie.

It's not nearly that multi-layered in Canada - just some variation between the provinces/territories - but we also don't display our sales taxes, with the exception of gas (petrol) and maybe a few other things? When you grow up with it, you just always know that the prices seldom include tax. I guess it would be disconcerting to visitors, but we're just used to it.

It would be too confusing. What with taxes and tipping, if I had $20 in my wallet I'd end up with only about 15 bucks net so I wouldn't be able to budget and would be one of those annoying people at the register choosing what to put back.

We know the tax will be around 8.5%. Cheaper than the Aussies! None of ours (that I am aware of) is over 8.9%. We know that at least!
