We have a state full of crazies too AKA Queensland so we understand. Not only do we have only 7 states the names are easy to remember. The big one to the west is called, er, Western Australia. The one in the north is, yup, the Northern Territory and the one in the south is, you guessed, South Australia. Then there's the above mentioned Queensland, New South Wales AKA Sydney, all fur coat and no knickers, Victoria AKA The Centre Of The Civilised World and dear old Tasmania where your sister is likely to be your mother-in-law.

Note that Florida is still being a dick.

Tasmania sounds like our West Virginia.

I have always wondered where Mississippo was. Now I know.

Don't feel bad Shellee, the Kintyre Peninsula (near where I used to live) is shaped like a quite convincing willy, and the isle of Arran is the balls.

I looove that USA by Australians map, that's too funny. I realise this probably makes me a spud but I hadn't realised the Oz is the same size as the USA. I really should have, since Australia has so much room for scary scary animals.

The balls have been severed by the Sound of Bute(terrible Julie Andrews musical by the way).

The sound of Bute is old ladies telling stories about the old days. Bute's where a huge amount of old folk retire to since it was a major holiday destination back in the day. That bit of the map was a full-size wall mural at my old office. Not gonna lie, every time I went to the photocopier it made me chuckle. Giant land willy. Lol.

Since when has the Northern Territory been a state? Last I heard we had 6 states and 2 territories plus a bunch of floating rocks where we occasionally dump refugees.

State, Territory, whatever. Either way we don't have 50 of them!

I'm not sure most Americans could do any better with the map. It would probably work out to "yankees, hillbillies, hippies, and REAL AMURICANS!!!" in my neck of the woods.

I'm American and I agree our public toilet stalls with the gaps in the doors are problematic. I didn't realize that they're not like that everywhere. But I won't use public bathrooms unless it's an absolute emergency. I would rather wait for hours than use a public toilet.

I would love to visit Australia. That's number one on my list of future travel destinations.

I'll tell you one thing, Southernbelle -- it was a dream vacation for us. The only reason I went there was to present a technical paper, but we knew that we should make the most of it and decided what we thought was practical to visit in 10 days. It was amazing. Every day we were doing something. The people were awesome, the exchange rate was awesome, public transportation was awesome, the animals were awesome, the ability to visit a different and faraway place without having too much culture shock was awesome. I would have emigrated there (at the time) if I didn't think it would have broken my parents' hearts.

Can you imagine if we did? There would be states the size of Texas with maybe half a dozen homesteads and a couple of mines, while the eastern seaboard would be a clusterfuck (literally) and a bureaucratic nightmare.

We avoided this problem when my parents decided to emigrate here too. Unfortunately my Pa didn't really live long enough to enjoy it but Ma is still going strong and LOVES it.

There does seem to be a perception, particularly among the older generation, that Australia is an unimaginable distance away and once people come here they are never seen or heard from again. In the days before the Internet, Skype and modern airplanes it was a bit epic getting here but these days it's a 12 hour flight across the Pacific and flights have never been cheaper or more comfortable (comparatively speaking). It's all about how you fill those 12 hours - meal or 2, 2-3 movies, read a book, sleep a bit. Done.

When we told family and friends we were emigrating to Oz (14 years ago today as it happens) the reaction we "ohhhhh, you are so BRAVE!". Huh? This is a first world country with electricity and indoor plumbing and everything. The Deadly Creatures hysteria is exactly that (thanks Steve Idiot Irwin), the weather is great, the people are laid back and friendly, there is a HUGE amount of this unique and beautiful country to explore and we have never regretted a single moment. And we speak English, kinda.
