Why am I getting a 1980s early 90s vibe from this?

The Cunard suite is beautifully restrained IMO; NCL suites are garish and tacky.

Call me fuddy-duddy, but I love this - opulent but comfortable and low-key like back in the day.

Some of these are SO outdated that it hurts, you'd think they would go for more classic styles for the suites so they don't look so out of fashion after a few years, especially since on many of the ships I've been on they've given face lifts to the rest of the ship to make it more modern, but the rooms still look exactly the same. I also don't think I could ever see myself booking one of these. We take a cruise every year (or at least try to), but always book an inside room now. I don't see the point in spending SO MUCH money on that size of room for 2 people when we are rarely in the room except to sleep and change clothes. Even the time we booked a balcony room we barely used our own balcony, opting for fully open air areas instead.

We liked it, but we didn't use it as much as we thought we would. It was nice to watch us coming and going into port, but all the balconies are far more shaded because of the ship's structure so we would typically go to one of the more open decks so we could be out in the sun too-and the ship we were on had ample uncrowded deck space. We had this idea of how we would be using it all the time because it was a private space, but the ship we were on wasn't sold out, and had a great public area to passenger ratio, so we never felt crowded anywhere (Carnival Pride, it's out of Baltimore now, but we LOVED it so much when it was in Florida).

I always pick a balcony cabin (not a penthouse, waste of money) because I like fresh air and daylight. Most of the time I prefer to hang out in the public areas where there's usually a quiet spot in various bars, lounges or by the pool and someone to bring a perfect G&T. I cruise to meet people and be sociable so I see no point in shutting myself away in the cabin.

But I agree that cruise ship decor generally is pretty craptastic. Either very safe, bland, beige and boring, or it should carry a seizure warning.
