NYC graffiti Mecca is whitewashed overnight to make way for luxury condos

    • 5 Pointz, a warehouse in Long Island City, Queens known as the United Nations of Graffiti for its international renown is now a plain white building
    • Street artists had recently lost a legal fight to preserve the spot where thousands had left their marks legally over nearly 30 years
    • Building owner Jerry Wolkoff says he loved the graffiti and though he'll be tearing down the building, he painted over it first as the 'humane' thing to do

I saw an interview with the owner this morning - he sounds like a great owner who is actually respectful of these artists. He stated that the art was constantly in flux (as graffitti art is) and he wanted the whitewash to be like ripping off a band-aid. Instead of taking 4 or 5 months to slowly destroy the art and have it be a drain on the psyche of the area he thought whitewashing it and quickly get minds moving forward.

10,000 sq ft of the new building will be designated for aerosole and street art.

Wow that sucks, some of the stuff in the photos there was brilliant. I guess I can see where the owner's coming from, but the big delay in this building coming down and the new one going up might sort of pull the rug out from the artists, who knows if they'll go to the new building. Sad sad sad.
I smile because I have no idea what's going on

Wow, some of those are amazing. That's the kind of graffiti I can get behind. I hate the tagging shit that covers LA.
