Default France voted best place to live in the world

France was voted best place to live in the world for the fifth year running, while Britain fell to 25th place behind Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Uruguay.

The Quality of Life index, published by the International Living magazine, said the French live life to the full, and its bon vivant lifestyle, "best health service in the world" and diverse landscapes set it apart.

"Romantic Paris offers the best of everything, but services don't fall away in Alsace's wine villages, in wild and lovely Corsica, in lavender-scented Provence, or in the Languedoc of the troubadours, bathed in Mediterranean sunlight," the survey noted.

The magazine surveyed 194 countries on nine criteria: cost of living, culture and leisure, economy, environment, freedom, health, infrastructure, safety and risk, and climate.

Australia came second, followed by Switzerland, Germany and New Zealand.

I've always wanted to visit France, though I don't speak a word of French.
Who says being second best is such a bad thing?

I don't care what this survey is saying, there's no way I'm moving to France. I was so happy the day I was leaving I tipped the taxi driver who took me to the airport. Hell, I almost kissed him too.

LaFolie, it had been a mostly crap experience for me. I don't think that all of France is like that, though, probably just Auvergne.

Anyway, if I want strikes, bureaucracy and people in the service industry to be rude to me I might as well stay in Greece, I get that in spades. I just think that there's something about the French outlook in life that doesn't agree with me. I like the language, the literature, most of the cinema and Paris and many other places I visited were utterly beautiful. I'm not completely averse to visiting but in general France just isn't for me.

The tax rates are way too high for me to consider living in France:

The U.S. is actually in the top 10? I'm shocked.

And while I don't want to live in France, it is one of the countries I'd like to visit along with Egypt, Australia, Italy, Greece, Russia, Japan and England.

I loved visiting France. As long as I tried to speak a little French, the people were fine. I have visited most countries in Europe and enjoyed each of them for different reasons and would definitely go back.

You've never actually visited? For some reason I thought you had... We had some Quebecois students too when I was there and some of them had a hard time esp. when they would use "tu" with people in the service industry. I'm thinking that the usage of polite plural has fallen by the wayside accross the pond.

Yeah, I could never deal with all the spiders, snakes etc.
Out of the top ten I'd live in France, I like it there.
