Default Artists brighten up the pavement at the Pasadena Chalk Festival

600 artists from all walks of life were on their hands and knees for the 2009 Pasadena Chalk Festival...

...the world's largest street painting festival

Running for two days and using over 25,000 sticks of pastel chalk...

...people worked to transform the pavements of Pasadena, California, into colourful works of art

Some artists chose to illustrate American icons such as President Barack Obama, or local NBA champions the LA Lakers...

...while others used their concrete canvas to make a political statement such as the call to repeal the controversial "Prop 8"

Working in the hot California sun meant umbrellas were used to keep the artists cool

Some artists chose to go a step beyond using just chalk pastels and made their art three-dimensional...

    ...and subject matter included angels...

    ...the curling waves of California...

    ...cartoon children...

    ...and women carrying sunflowers

While some artists chose to work by themselves...

...others worked together on their designs

But at the end of it all, and despite all their hard work, the hoses were turned on and the chalk washed away

These are stunning--such delicate and impermanent beauty.
