That outlook used to hold water 15-17 years ago, before companies started cutting salaries and benefits like health care. Look at some recent and current statistics. This comments reminds me of my parents who can't seem to get the economic state of the 70's out of their minds, when they were still working.

We don't have health insurance because we can't get it as individuals. My son and I have asthma and my husband has a condition, so we can't get anything. We incorporated both of our businesses this year so we could qualify for group insurance, which means they can't refuse us coverage because of pre-existing conditions, but we didn't know that if we have group insurance, we have to offer it to our employees and pay 50% of their premiums - by law in our state.
It's $350 per person and we have seven employees. So it would end up being almost $2300 a month for us to have insurance. That's a bit steep, especially considering that that's a cut-rate plan where you have a 10k deductible and 50% copays on doctors visits and prescriptions. We just can't afford that. It would be over 5k a month for decent deductibles and copays. Who the hell can afford that? If we could just offer it to them, that would be one thing. But we have to pay half.
And we're not shitty employers by the way, we just can't afford to pay that kind of money for insurance at this time.

I didn't have health insurance until I got hired in FT at my current job and it was SO hard. I have medical problems up the wazoo, so I had to wait on a lot of my issues until after I got insured. It was challenging to say the least.

Oh yeah, I could afford it is I really wanted to but it's going to cut into a lot of my "me" money, that's what I was saying eariler. I just think $600.00 a month for nothing is a lot of money. I could be paying $600.00 for 2 years before I get pregnant. That's a lot of wasted money.

Wow, I feel kind of lucky. My insurance is only $64 a paycheck for damn good coverage. Still, I don't bring home shit for a paycheck.

Wait, I'm just trying to understand. Do you have NO insurance at all or just no maternity insurance? If you have no insurance at all, you are really gambling here! One accident or illness would have you wishing you'd forked out money for coverage to avoid complete financial disaster.
If you are talking about just maternity coverage, you may need to plan out just when you want to have a baby. Most private insurance policies have a year or more waiting period after getting the coverage before it will cover anything for pregnancy. So, yeah, forking out the money 'for nothing' sucks (believe me I know, I have forked over almost 700 a month on a much lower salary than you), but sometimes if you want coverage you just have to bite the bullet.
