I must admit after visiting Australia I have lost my fear of the namby-pamby UK ones..especially after I nearly walked into one of these bad boys in the Cairns jungle. *shudder* the thing was the size of my head...

Yeah - but you don't often see people in them. A baby sometimes but not adults. You'll be right.

I know you won't believe me but I see a spider, any spider, probably 3-4 times a year? They are not swarming everywhere. In 10 years I've seen a Huntsman (like in the video) maybe 4 times and always way up high on the ceiling, never in the car although they do turn up there sometimes.

I can understand how terrifying it must seem to arachnaphobes (sp?) but you shouldn't believe everything you see on the Discovery channel (or Youtube).

Having said that here's a true story. A bloke I know woke in the night to take a drink of water from the glass by his bed, took a swig and got a monthfull of Huntsman! Sleep well.

I was going to ask, is it as common as the guy in the vid made it seem? And I wanna see some of these giant spider pictures. I never really thought they could get that big?

No they are not that common, at least not in the city. Huntsmen may be big but they are not poisonous. You need to watch out for funnelwebs and redbacks in that regard and they are quite small. I've never seen either but then again I'm not bothered by spiders so I don't spend my life looking for them and worrying where they are. Ditto snakes.

And the size of the spider in that big photo is deceptive. The spider is much closer to the camera and so looks enormous.

My aunt is arachnophobe. She & my uncle moved to Australia...they stayed 6 months. She would not sleep at night because she was scared of the spiders.

You know I looked up the video of the bird and spider on youtube. Lets just say if you are scared of spiders don't do it. Don't. Do it.

Holy Crap...... got shivers going down my spine just from reading this thread. YIKES. Me and spiders: not a good combo. I usually kill them on sight or else I won't have a moments peace. But if they're as big as in this video or worse even that picture, then I'm outta there.
