Down here in the nether regions, we say abowwt. Have never heard anyone say "ruff". We just say "roof".

Don't worry about what other people think. They don't do it very often.

I hear the accent once in awhile on Canadian TV. Like Grimm said, it isn't aboot, it more curt and cut off at the end, and not drawn out like we generally say here.
Also, I have never in my life heard someone say 'ruff' for roof. If I did, I would laugh at them. Also, Americans have different accents for different parts of the country - and I'm sure Canada does as well - so we can't all be lumped together. Me being in the west coast, originally from the east, there are some words/pronunciations that I use that they don't here. My husband's family is from Kansas and Texas - and it is a noticeable change.

OH believe me when they interview people after a tornado or hurricane here in the Houston area you hear them say "it bout torn off my ruff". Ill look at my husband and we both will roll our eyes and bow our heads in shame. Especially if they show it on The Weather Channel.
