Oh, I know lots of people who say "eh." It's kind of a redneck/rural thing though. I only say it when I'm around a lot of Canadian friends and I'm loaded.

I've never heard anyone pronounce about as aboot. I don't think that's very common here in British Columbia.

If you think it's crazy, you ain't seen a thing. Just wait until we're goin down in flames.

I don't like it when people say "Ant." There's a friggin' U in there, folks!! Ants crawl on the ground!!!! Btw, I'm a black chick from the South, and there are those down there that say both "ant" and "aunt."

PB: The fact that you typed "Huh?" in another thread made me laugh AGAIN when I read your post here!! It's so unlike you!

The 'aboot' thing is definitely there.. Yanks usually say aBAAAAAAAUT.. ours is more clipped.. it's not quite "aboot", it's just truncated about with not so much emphasis on the second syllable.. it's kinda irish, how it's done.

True, but it's still not "aboot." NEVER heard anyone say that. Newfie and other Maritime accents are heavily Irish and Scottish based.

I haven't really been exposed to a lot of Canadians, but to me they don't seem to have an accent. The chicks on "Canada''s Next Top Model"(yes, I watched it, yes I have no life) sounded like they could have been from anywhere in the Good Old U S of A. Now Peter Jennings, had somewhat of an accent. He did the "oot" thing on occasion.

People in the Maritimes, especially Newfoundland, have very strong accents, and they say "eh" a lot.

    Where is TS? The south?
TS is Team Speak (a voice chat program that online gamers use a lot). It's awesome, I can be speaking with people from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, anywhere although people from those countries are the ones I most commonly speak with. I have also learned that if I ask someone if they're from Australia, and they're actually from New Zealand, sometimes they get testy. Gamers are a testy bunch sometimes.

Aboot is probably an exaggeration, but close to what it sounds like to some of us. It's all in the vowels.
Don't worry about what other people think. They don't do it very often.

I've only used them for PC games (WWII Online, UO, EQ etc). Great for the gaming, but sometimes it's funny to hear someone you've previously spoken with only by typing, and discover they are NOTHING like what you thought.

See now all this Canada talk has me looking up railway tours through the Canadian Rockies. Not that I can do it this year, but a girl can daydream!!

    I blame you people.

I'm glad you did! Sometimes, in the face of absurdity, all one can say is "Huh?"

My friend from Maine says "aboat."
