THE photographed remains of a mysterious "creature" washed up on a Long Island beach near New York have led to a frenzy of speculation.
News of the find has excited conspiracy theorists around the world.
Dubbed the Montauk Monster, rumours grew that it was part of a secret breeding program by the US Government.
But gawker.com has suggested it is a marketing stunt for a new US TV cartoon series.

My mother sent me this link, so I'm posting it in her honor. Is this even a legitimate news source? I have no clue.

It's a fox with mange!
oops, sorry, wrong board.
Any Snopesters out there?
If it's a marketing stunt for a cartoon it's pretty gross! I agree that this thing is probably not real. But they said the same thing when they first saw a platypus too.
Please tell me it is fake
Looks like a dog with an Eagle's head
it's a chupacabra ya'll!
I am from the American CIA and I have a radio in my head. I am going to kill you.
The head does not look like a fox, rat, or anything else that should go with that body. I don't know how anyone would think it would be good marketing/pr, if it's a marketing stunt. Experimental mutant...maybe. I don't know, but it's grossing me out. I hope nothing like that ever washes up on my beach. Yuck!
It looks like it's flipping us off in death.

Montauk monster? - snopes.com
The general consensus is it is most probably a mouldy racoon.
That's what this guy says too.
Tetrapod Zoology : What was the Montauk monster?
Pretty sad when a decomposing raccoon makes international news. Why didn't some "journalist" think to ask a zoologist?

Cartoon Network was advertising a new show, Cryptids Are Real, maybe it's an ad scheme for that.
Snooky Wookums, prepare for the invasion!
Looks like a beaver to me, a shaved beaver.
I love shaved beavers.
I think it came from this laboratory
