you had to be in superb physical conditioning to do pro wrestling in the early 1900's-1920's.

Matches could last for hours back then. It was just typically one match advertised since it went so long.

For instance - Wladek Zbyszko (No relation to Larry) wrestled Joe Stecher for three hours and fifteen minutes. Guys would sometimes put restholds on each other that lasted thirty minutes or more.

Here's a few old newspaper clippings

    Stanislaus Zbyszko

Strangler Lewis was just absolutely awesome

Frank Gotch may have been one of the first wrestlers with endorsement deals

George Hackenschmidt was superb in the ring too

    Thanks Seth.
I knew him when he (was supposed to) have stopped.
He was about my height (5'8") and wirey rather than bulky - however we were fooling around one time & he "bench-pressed" me off him (& I'm really not light (190lbs? I'm built for comfort, not speed!) and was trying hard not to move. *sigh* good times!

Any way! The fights used to happen around racecourses when the racing has finished with the Irish & travellers....
